Memorandum - Trent University

Memorandum
TO:
All Employees Currently Receiving Sun Life Benefits
FROM:
Carley Brook, Benefits Assistant
SUBJECT:
Up-date on Trent’s Benefit Plan
DATE:
August 19, 2014
Recently, Trent University’s Benefit Plan was competitively tendered. We are pleased to announce that Sun Life
Assurance Company of Canada was the successful proponent and will continue as Trent’s Benefit provider. All
current benefit plans will remain intact with the exception of the changes below:
Co-ordination of Benefits for Married/ Common Law Couples Who are Both Working at Trent
Trent is now offering the family benefit plan to each partner when both are employed by Trent University. This will
allow for co-ordination of benefits. Given that there is no requirement for employees to disclose that they are married
or in common-law relationships with other Trent employees, either at the time of hire or after, you must contact us to
indicate that you wish to have Family benefits for you and your spouse or common law partner.
Please contact me at ext.7569 or [email protected] by September 30, 2014 to ensure eligibility. After
September 30, 2014, you or your spouse or common law partner will be required to fill out a qualifying
health statement to determine eligibility for the plan.
Changes in Relation to Over-the-Counter (OTC) Drugs
Our benefit plan must meet certain requirements as set out by the Canada Revenue Agency. One such requirement
is that the benefits offered must follow the guidelines of the Medical Expense Tax Credits (METC). The METC
states that you cannot claim over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, or supplements, even if prescribed by a
medical practitioner. Effective September 30, 2014, with the exception of those drugs that Sun Life determines to
be life-sustaining (i.e. nitroglycerine and epi-pens), OTC drugs will not be covered under Trent’s Benefit Plan. There
is a list of drugs that will continue to be covered, so please contact Sun Life directly (1-800-361-6212) to determine if
an OTC drug you have been prescribed is still covered.
Beneficiary Forms for Life Insurance
It has been our experience that staff and faculty sometimes forget to change their beneficiary forms when
circumstances in their lives change. We would like to use this opportunity to up-date our records regarding the
beneficiary(ies) for your Sun Life insurance. Enclosed you will find a Beneficiary Form to be completed and returned
to Human Resources. If you do not return a new form we will assume the one we presently have on file is correct.
Please return forms by September 30, 2014.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at ext.7569 or [email protected].
Yours truly,
Carley Brook
Benefits Assistant
