Jesus heals a Demon Possessed Man & Peter’s Mother-in-Law (Mk. 1:21-34)
Mark 1:32-34
At evening, when the sun had set,
they brought to Him all who were
sick and those who were demonpossessed. 33 And the whole city
was gathered together at the door.
34 Then He healed many who were
sick with various diseases, and
cast out many demons; and He did
not allow the demons to speak,
because they knew Him.
Jesus heals a Demon Possessed Man & Peter’s Mother-in-Law (Mk. 1:21-34)
“Their delay till sundown was
unquestionably caused by the
traditional law of the Sabbath
which forbade men to carry
any burden on that day (Joh
5:10). The Sabbath closed at
sundown (Le 23:32).” – The
Fourfold Gospel, J.W.
McGarvy comments on Mk.

“For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He
had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father
has been working until now, and I have been working." 18 Therefore the Jews
sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also
said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.”

ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”
“…Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from
the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of
Abraham, whom Satan has bound--think of it--for eighteen years, be loosed from
this bond on the Sabbath?” (vs. 15-16)
Jesus Heals a Man With Swelling (Lk. 14:1-6)
Lk. 14:5
“Which of you, having a donkey or an ox
that has fallen into a pit, will not
immediately pull him out on the Sabbath
day?”
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind (Jn. 9:1-16)
The Pharisees:
Jn. 9:16

does not keep the Sabbath.’ Others said,
‘How can a man who is a sinner do such
signs?’ And there was a division among
them.”
Jn. 9:24
“Give God the glory! We know that this Man
is a sinner.”
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind (Jn. 9:1-16)
The Healed Blind Man:
Jn. 9:25
“Whether He is a sinner or not I do not
know. One thing I know: that though I was
blind, now I see.”
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind (Jn. 9:1-16)
The Healed Blind Man:
Jn. 9:31
“Now we know that God does not hear
sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of
God and does His will, He hears him.”
Jn. 9:33

do nothing.”
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind (Jn. 9:1-16)

The Law Must Be Kept
Matthew 5:19
"Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches
men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and
teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
“A higher law, where it conflicts with a lower one, suspends or limits the lower one
at the point of conflict.” – J.W. McGarvy on Mat. 27:7
Matthew 12:5
"Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple
profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?”
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
Matthew 22:36-40
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 Jesus said to him," 'You
shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind.' 38 "This is the first and great commandment. 39 "And the second is like
it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 "On these two commandments
hang all the Law and the Prophets."
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
Romans 13:10
Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
Why? Because The Purpose of God’s Law Is To Point Us To Christ!
1 Corinthians 9:21
to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under
law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law;
Galatians 3:24
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
Matthew 5:23-24
"Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother
has something against you, 24 "leave your gift there before the altar, and go your
way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”
Higher Laws Supersede Lesser Laws
The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
Matthew 9:13
"But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' For I did not
come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."

The Highest Parts of the Law Come From the Heart
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have
become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of
prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all
faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And
though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be
burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.”
