EFFICIENCY INCREASE FOR ORC POWER PLANTS Ref-No: TA-B76094 Bayerische Patentallianz GmbH BACKGROUND ORC plants can be used for electricity production in multiple applications. Their potential is tremendous for converting industrial waste heat and renewable energy sources into electricity (geothermal heat, solarthermal heat and biomass). The ORC concept is similar to a conventional Clausius-Rankine process. Instead of water, an organic working fluid is used, which offers high conversion efficiencies already at low temperatures. Commercial products are available in different load ranges and manufacturers can be found in countries all over the world. However, investment costs for this technology are still relatively high. Cheaper and more efficient concepts are therefore promising options for advantages on the market. The investment for the condenser in an ORC power plant is generally high. In order to reduce costs, or to maximize efficiency an optimized condensation concept is desired. 089 5480177-0 [email protected] www.baypat.de DEVELOPMENT STATUS Feasibility PATENT SITUATION PCT pending SOLUTION The invention can be combined with any heat exchanger applied as a condenser and is based on an optimized integration of this condenser into the plant The de-superheating of the working medium operates continuously by means of an injection cooling; the condenser operates then entirely in the 2-phase region. The application of the measure leads either to a reduced condenser size or a reduced condensation pressure The invention can be adapted in novel products by manufacturers or as a retrofit in existing plants A novel product has lower costs and can either be sold cheaper or with a larger profit margin www.inventionstore.de CATEGORIES //Environmental engineering //Electric power transmission //Energy engineering 1/2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org) Picture: Air condenser for ORC (© Chair for Energy Systems, Wieland, 2016) SCOPE OF APPLICATION Target group: Operators and manufacturers Applications: Retrofit or integration in commercial products Benefit: Higher electricity output and cheaper production costs/larger profit margin Market: For industrial waste heat in Germany: 65 PJ/a (T>150°C) SERVICE Developmental Status Readiness level: Simulations; Proof-of-concept in test rig is planned TUM LES is interested in realizing a retrofit (especially promising for plants with high feed-in tariff) Offer Cooperation, license, option, purchase, world-wide, exclusive www.inventionstore.de 2/2
