3. Introduction
The Department of French Language and Literature has greatly developed from its
advent in 1981 to 2000 when a master’s degree program, the only one of its kind at a
national university in Taiwan, was set up. The department’s curriculum is characterized
by a dual focus on applied language and the deeper layer of underlying culture. As a
consequence, students all have room to grow and develop by taking either advanced
study or a career path.
The department has a long-standing international exchange program with France's
University of Limoges. In recent years it has also entered into a formal agreement with
such well-known international institutions of higher learning as France’s Catholic
University of Paris, University of Lyon II, University of Lyon III, University of Reims
Champagne-Ardenne, University of Franche-Comté, University of Blaise Pascal, Catholic
University of Lyon, Belgium’s Catholic University of Louvain, Université Libre de Bruxelles,
Switzerland’s University of Geneva, Canada's University de Montreal, and so on.
