12./13. Purpose of cell organelles 11. Cytoplasm Cell Wall – provide structure and support for the cell Nucleus Enodplasmic Reticulum Mitochondria Cell Membrane – control what enters and exits the cell. Water in; waste out Mitochondria – converts energy for cell use Ribosomes Golgi Bodies Golgi Bodies – packages materials to be shipped around the cell E.R. – transports materials around the cell Lg. Central Vacuole – provides storage and support for the cell Ribosomes – makes proteins Nucleus – controls the activity of the cell Chloroplast - plant organelle that converts the sun’s energy to make food for the plant. 15 Plant Structures Animal Structures 14. You make a model of a cell in a large, rectangular, clear, plastic container filled with the following: gelatin, green M&Ms™, red licorice, several beans, one large inflated balloon, candy sprinkles, and an avocado seed. What does the avocado seed represent? What does the balloon represent? What do the green M&M’s represent? What kind of cell is this? Cell Wall Chloroplast Lg. Central Vacuole Nucleus Cell membrane Mitochondria E.R. Lysosome Golgi Bodies *Cell Theory - *cells are the smallest unit of life*All living organisms are made up of cells*all cells come from preexisting cells 2. /3 Cell – smallest unit of living organisms Tissue – group of cells doing the same job 2. Mitochondria are responsible for converting energy for cell use. Organs – group of tissues working together Organ System – group of organs working together 3. Examples of levels of organization 1. 4. Cell Part Analogy Cell Membrane = border fence Nucleus = principal’s office/city hall Mitochondria = power plant/circuit breakers In lab to observe Lysosomes = police/janitors cells we used a microscope E.R. = freeway Golgi Bodies = packaging centers Lg. Central Vacuole Mitochondria 16./22. How is it that all the cells we observed in lab were identical? Think Cell theory. The smallest unit of an organism is the cell. All living organisms are made up of cells. All cells come from preexisting cells. They look identical because when they divide their DNA is copied and divided into two new identical cells. All living things have CELLS in common. Human cheek cell
