Best Practices for RSP Process Monitoring (2).

Introduction :
The steps below explain how to monitor a process using rsp probe.
Environment:
Windows , Unix, Linux servers.
Instructions:
Case 1: User wants to monitor a process on many servers. The process may or may not be running on
all the systems.
Option 1: Create profile of same process on multiple servers with the help of process list window
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Deploy RSP Probe
Discover the hosts from RSP discovery
Go to advance configuration section and go to Templates section.
Go to processes template and then expand it
Go to default template and go to its right pane
Set Active =yes and save the configuration. As shown below
7. Now go back to normal GUI and click on a server where the process you need to monitor is
running. Right click on the server and click on Processes as shown below
8. A process list will appear. Now find the processes you need to monitor and right click on it.
Create a monitoring profile.
9. Enable the alarm/qos you want from the list and click on OK
10. Now enter the name of the profile and click OK
11. Now a window will appear where user can select if he wants to monitor the process on only 1
box (Profile Override) or multiple boxes (Template). Click on template (for monitoring
notepad.exe process on all the discovered servers)
12. This will create a template profile on all the servers with the alarm/qos as chosen by the user
13. RSP will show below results as the Template was pushed to all the discovered hosts
Fig 1 – displays that the process is running on box 10.112.16.54 and is up
Fig 2 – displays that the process is not running on box 10.112.69.37 and is down. It is getting
displayed as a warning symbol
Fig 1
Fig 2
14. Hence we can monitor same process on different servers using this option
Option2: Create profile of same process on multiple servers with the help of advanced configuration
(Preferred approach in case you want same process to be monitored for large amount of servers
irrespective it is running or not)

Deploy RSP Probe
Discover the hosts from RSP discovery
Go to advance configuration section and go to Templates section.
Go to processes template and then expand it
Go to default template and go to its right pane
Set Active =yes and save the configuration. As shown below
7. Now go to the inst_default template just below the default template and enable/disable to
alarms/qos you want to monitor for the process
Note: User can also create his own templates/inst templates to cater to the needs
8. Now go to Group section on the advanced configuration. Go to Windows and expand it. Go to
processes and right click on it. Click on Add instance.
9. Enter the process profile name, process name etc. Give Template as inst_default as shown in the
fig below. Click OK and save the configuration.
10. Now go to main RSP GUI and check the status of the calculator profile
11. RSP will show below results.
Fig 1 – displays that the process is running on box 10.112.16.54 and is up
Fig 2 – displays that the process is not running on box 10.112.69.37 and is down. It is getting
displayed as a warning symbol

12. Hence we can monitor same process on different servers using this option.
Case 2: User wants to monitor a process on one server. The process may or may not be running the
system.
Option 1: Create profile of process on one server with the help of process list

9. Enable the alarm/qos you want from the list and click on OK
10. Now enter the name of the profile and click OK
11. Now a window will appear where user can select if he wants to monitor the process on only 1
box (Profile Override) or multiple boxes (Template). Click on profile override (for monitoring
notepad.exe process one server)
12. This will create a profile only on one server with the alarm/qos as chosen by the user
13. RSP will show below results. It displays that the process is running on box 10.112.16.54 and is up
14. Hence we can monitor a process on one server using this option
Option2: Create profile of one process one server with the help of advanced configuration
(Preferred approach in case you want to monitor one process on one server irrespective it is running or
not)- This approach will expect user to go to each server and run these settings

8. Now go to Profile Templates section in the advanced configuration. Go to Windows and expand
it. Go to the server where you want to monitor the process and right click on it. Click on Add
instance. As shown in the figure below.
9. Enter the process profile name, process name etc. Give Template as inst_default as shown in the
fig below. Click OK and save the configuration.
10. Now go to main RSP GUI and check the status of the calculator profile on the server.
11. RSP will display that the process is not running on box 10.112.69.37 and is down. It is getting
displayed as a warning symbol
12. Hence we can monitor a process on any server even if the process is not running on that box.
