December 2016 New member receives one-of-a-kind honour Investing in her future has paid off for Jenny Goddard, who is the first person ever to receive the Diploma in Building Surveying ISO9001:2008 (level 5). Also a Registered Architect, Jenny recently graduated from the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors’ (NZIBS) Core Module Training programme earlier this year. The Institute launched its internationally recognised certificate in September, which was developed with the assistance of NZQA-recognised training specialist Vertical Horizonz. Completing the Institute’s 10 modules guarantees a career pathway to becoming a Registered Building Surveyor. Jenny says it was an added bonus to find that she was the first person to be awarded the diploma. Although the programme was a “pretty serious commitment”, it enabled her to delve into a plethora of building surveyor topics. “The in-depth nature of the NZIBS training modules is superior to other professional development modules – it really is a step up from the training offered by other organisations,” she says. “The training modules were a very intensive course but you get what you pay for, so it was well-worth the investment.” Jenny says the presenters, many of whom are experienced Registered Building Surveyors, and training material were “enlightening”. Among those high-quality presenters was Warren Neville, who shared hundreds of building-related problems suffered by often unsuspecting homeowners. Module participants undertook classroom and onsite work to get an understanding of the skill base required to complete a forensic/weathertightness investigation of residential and small commercial buildings. “My skill set as an architect involved having an eye for design and aesthetics, but the modules taught me to view a building from a more analytical aspect,” Jenny says. After 25 years of architectural practice, Jenny is keen to shift into more of a building consultancy role. She thought the comprehensive training offered by the NZIBS was an essential component of that change. “Training, upskilling and deepening my understanding of the building industry is hugely important for me, so that I’m well-equipped to provide professional services,” Jenny says. “Without the confidence that comes with completing the modules, I would not be managing earthquake remediation work for the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary. “So I’m very much looking forward to what else the future holds for me with this new-found knowledge.” Whether you are an architect like Jenny, or in the construction industry and looking to upskill, the diploma course could be a beneficial option for you. Upon completing the five-month block Core Module Training programme in Auckland or in Christchurch, you would be able to apply for your Diploma in Building Surveying ISO9001:2008.
