Sermon Notes - Walkersville Community Church

Will Jesus find us asleep in the place of prayer?
37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon,
are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that
you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the
flesh is weak.”
Mark 14:32-42
Who Will Watch With Jesus?
Will we meet Jesus in His place of sorrow?
32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his
disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
Text Message:
o Underline the first sentence and circle the word
“Gethsemane.”
o Gethsemane was an olive grove at the foot of Mount of
Olives. Gethsemane means “oil press,” and refers to a place
of sorrow and crushing.
o Notice Jesus’ disciples went with him to this place of sorrow.
o Here Jesus faces the sorrow of all that his death will entail.
o Have you ever thought about what causes Christ sorrow now?
Who will meet Jesus in Gethsemane?
o Gethsemane is the place where we allow our hearts to be
broken by God with what breaks the heart of God.
o Like Jesus’ Gethsemane, it’s a lonely place filled with sorrow.
Text Message:
o Jesus is being crushed at the “oil press” of Gethsemane,
knowing his lifeblood would be shed while his disciples sleep!
o And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat
became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Luke 22:44
o Meanwhile, his disciples sleep on.
o The one thing he asked of them they failed to do.
o So he reminds them again to watch and pray.
o Are these verses an accurate picture of today’s church?
Are we asleep to what is foremost on the heart of God?
Are we asleep in our busyness, failing to watch and pray?
Will Jesus find us asleep when it comes to prayer?
Will we sleep as our world slips toward a Christ-less eternity?
Do we care enough for others to go to Gethsemane?
How much longer will Jesus find his Church asleep to prayer?
o Prayer for us is the same as it was for these disciples:
1) There will always be something else to do.
2) There will always be a reason not to pray.
3) It will always require our spirit to master the flesh.
Will we have nothing to say to our Master?
40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very
heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.
Text Message:
o Sadly, for the disciples nothing changed.
o They had nothing but silence for their Master.
o Will we also go back to sleep while our Master grieves?
Will we also meet him with silence?
You are now entering your mission field!
Will Jesus find us asleep in the place of prayer?
