Learning Guide: Bronx Masquerade
Due Friday, February 5: Complete ONE task from each skill category: knowledge,
comprehension, application, and analyze. Synthesize for a higher grade.
Knowledge: Create flashcards that target key poetic terms. Provide accurate citations.
1. Create 6 flashcards A: Define the poetic terms: simile, metaphor, alliteration, rhyme,
personification, and hyperbole. B: Provide rich examples for each term on the back.
2. Create 3 flashcards A: Quote three of your favorite lines of poetry from the book (pg.
#, title of poem, author). B: Explain why the lines are your favorites on the back.
3. Create 3 flashcards A: Cite three student poems (identify author, page #). B: Identify
two of the poetic elements found in each of these student poems on the back.
Comprehension: Respond using multiple paragraphs, each containing a topic sentence.
1. Explain why Open Mike gets so many students to reveal their dreams and fears more
than a typical class. Discuss whether it would work at your school or not.
2. Identify two students in Mr. Ward's class that you believe are most affected by
Open Mike Fridays. Explain your choices using specific details from the novel.
3. Predict what happens next year in the lives of two characters in Mr. Ward’s class.
Application: Create a slideshow (at least 5 slides to drop folder).
1. Choose a student from Mr. Ward’s class and write five questions you might ask
him/her. Then, answer each question as you think they would.
2. Predict the future for 5 students in Mr. Ward's class. For each student, write a 1-2
sentence summary explaining what happens to these 5 students.
Analyze: Respond using multiple paragraphs, each containing a topic sentence.
1. Focus on a single character and show how he or she changes over the course of the
book. Give specific examples to show the change in attitude or actions.
2. Compare and contrast the problems of the teenagers in Mr. Ward's class with those you
think are in your current class. How are they alike? How are they different?
Synthesize: For a higher grade, create a new character for Mr. Ward's class. Write two
journal entries & one poem through the eyes of your new character. Then, present your
writing in class.
