EQUATIONS UNIT 5 Day 45 Solutions of Equations Use p. 292 to review vocabulary GO 8.1 Solutions of Equations (can skip this or combine it with 8.2. This is mostly a review). If do this separate from 8.2, use Katie’s Kennel Task: o Katie operates a dog sitting business out of her home each summer. Katie’s Kennel has 3 dogs for one week, a small Yorkie, a Collie, and a large St. Barnard. Each day, the Collie eats twice as much as the Yorkie, and the St. Bernard eats three times as much as the Yorkie. Katie feeds the dog s total of 4 ½ pounds of dog food a day. How much dog food does each dog get in a day? How much dog food will Katie need for a week? Vocabulary o Equation: statement that two mathematical expressions are equal o Solution of an equation: a value of a variable that makes an equations true Work in Go Math 8.1 Algepair Cards Homework: p. 145, 146 and sheet Day 46 Write Equations from words o translation from words to equation review this – they struggle a lot. Remind them that “than” is a magical word-it “flips”. Ex: 9 less than 14 = 5 is 14 – 9=5 Real World Video, Wind Farming GO 8.2 Write Equations TASK (GO) Unlock the Problem. o Students are not in text. Show problem on ELMO. Students solve problem and write an equation. Work in Go Math 8.2 Homework: p. 147, 148 Day 47 1-Step equations 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.6 Vocabulary: o Inverse operations: operations that undo each other Solve 1-step equations, begin with addition, subtraction, and then move to multiplication, division and require them to check their answer Suggestion for teaching: o Can use cups and tile separators (the concept is pretty easy for them so sometimes the tiles and cups confuses them) o Start with whole numbers o Add fractions, decimals Make sure they understand that the answer is the number solved for the variable, not what is on the other side of the equal sign. Ex: x + 4 = 9. The answer is 5 not 9 Homework: Use Go Math, all 4 lessons. Pick and choose the bare problems. Make sure they are mostly fractions and decimals with a few whole numbers thrown in. o Review whole numbers and fractions They write explanations in journal about why the equation works. Ex: C ÷ 5 = 5. Write in words: “the quotient of 25 and 5 is 5” or something similar to this. So they are taking the equations and doing the translating backwards. Extra Practice: SF, 1-14, 1-15 Extension for practice: incorporating addition and subtraction to make 2 step problems – example 3x + 4 = 13, check solution – worksheet for extra problems. Can use tiles and cups for this. HW – story problems. Use HW sheets from Go Math, all 4 lessons. Pick and choose the story problems they will do. o Use itools from ThinkCentral For each day, create HW sheets from Go Math, Scott Foresman, other texts, and Internet sources. Day 49 Equations and Inequalities and number line Introduce inequalities and what they mean (the idea that there are infinite number of solutions whereas with equations there is only one solution) Go Math 8.7, 8.8, 8.9, 8.10 (8.8 and 8.10 are the “meat” of inequalities) Vocabulary o Inequality: mathematical sentence that compares two expressions using the symbol <, >, ≤, ≥, or ≠. o Solution of an inequality: value of a variable that makes the inequality true. They can have more than one solution. TASK (Wiki) Wicked at Lagoon o In order to ride Wicked at Lagoon, you have to be at least 48 inches tall. Work with your team to describe what this height restriction would look like mathematically using an inequality. List 10 heights that would be allowed on the ride and 10 that would not be. How many possible heights are there? What can you say about the solution set of inequality? Illustrate on a number line to show all of the possible heights for Wicked. Work in book HW Day 50 Independent and dependent variables GO 9.1 Independent and Dependent Variables (Collaborate about concept) Vocabulary o Independent variable: variable whose value determines the value of another quantity o Dependent variable: variable whose value is determined by the value of another quantity Work in Go Math 9.1 Homework: p. 169, 170 Day 51 Equations and Tables TASK (Wiki) Summer Job o Bill wants to earn $135 this summer. He already has $42. If he earns $15 a week, at what week will he have enough to reach his goal? o See wiki for extensions GO 9.2 Equations and Tables (NCTM Puzzle Book) Peggy's Function Machine Chart Work in Go Math 9.2 Homework: 171, 172 Extra Practice: SF 12-6 Day 52 Analyze Relationships Real World Video Space Architecture o Ask: In the Mars greenhouse, how will the astronauts grow plants? GO 9.3 Problem Solving – Analyze Relationships TASK (GO) Unlock the Problem. o The amount of water pumped through a fire hose is 150 gallons over 1 min, 300 gallons over 2 min. If the pattern continues, how long will it take a firefighter to spray 3,000 gallons of water on a fire using this hose? o Write an equation o Math Talk in journal Work in Go Math 9.3 o Homework: p. 173, 174 Day 53 Graphing Relationships GO 9.4 Graphing Relationship between two quantities Spaghetti graphs and graphs to begin graphing Unlock the Problem o Look at graph and discuss scale o Math Talk in journal Work in Go Math 9.4 Homework: 175, 176 Day 54 Equations and Graphs Vocabulary o Linear equation: equation whose solutions form a straight line on a coordinate plane GO 9.5 Equations and Graphs (translate) How is (2, 4) different from (4, 2)? Unlock the Problem Work in Go Math 9.5 Homework: 177, 178 Day 55 Penny Problem Whale problem – see Rhiannon Review and Test
