aimed at the development of validated
e-learning models and ideas for a
European virtual university
based on regional and transnational
collaboration between existing European
universities


International collaboration, joint
development, use of materials from
other partners and increased interinstitutional contacts between teachers,
Sharing of information and reusable
teaching and learning objects between
partners.
Creation of study opportunities that are
time and space independent (ODL).
The general objectives of the project
This project positions itself in the ongoing
evolution in Europe, implementing ICT in
education as a strategic issue for future
university development. It wants more
precisely to contribute to the development
of a EUROPEAN virtual UNIVERSITY (EvU),
providing building blocks for extension of
the idea of a EvU gateway into a fully
functional collaborative environment.
The cEVU is a collaboration between five
existing international university networks,
three of which are already actively pursuing
academic and organisational cohesion in the
areas of distance and online learning:
EuroPACE, EUNITE and ECIU. Within this
project each network will focus, within the
collaboration, on specific issues that
however are complementing in the design
and construction of the cEVU:
 ECIU on the development of web
supported learning, specifically
aiming at the first year (e-learning to
support transition from high school to
first year university studies, difficult
subjects in the first year, emoderating).
 EUNITE on the development of web
based learning, and on issues that
are connected to the design of a
cEVU.
 EuroPACE on the development of
services needed by universities and
by the collaborating networks to
realise their objectives, and the
development of on demand learning
for professionals in the framework of
“diploma with service contract”.

Coimbra Group and EUA will
contribute specifically to the
dissemination.
Benefits gained from the project
Activities
The following
undertaken:
activities
are
being
1. Design of joint working practices, models
and policies for distance and online
education, including further development
of existing policies, models and practices
that promote e-learning, enhanced cooperation of partners to extend
internationalisation of their programmes
and inter-university networking, and
emphasising on pedagogy, organisation
and recognition.
2. Development of teaching and learning
services, building of the technical
infrastructure for a cEVU. In these
activities, the focus on standardisation
and interoperability as well as the use of
existing tools and services are vital.
For faculty staff and decision makers in
universities
 a richer offer of learning materials
especially at postgraduate and
continuous education level
 pooling of knowledge, which is a
necessity for highly specialised domains
 sharing of information and reusable
teaching and learning objects between
partners, which will lead to an economy
of preparation time.
 a more effective staff development:
through the collaborative development
of courses, teachers get to use tools
and pedagogical methods that are new
to them
 an improved pass rates in “difficult” first
year subjects, thus improving retention
rates and giving better economic returns
on resources used.
 Markets outside Europe will be attracted
to the cEVU concept which will further
exploit the already high reputation for
European higher education.
3. Development of new innovative online
environments and materials used as
pilots for validation of both former
activities.
For students
 increased possibilities for virtual and
physical mobility

”virtual Erasmus” is also a strong
motivational factor and supports
effectively the building of European
citizenship.
