Pickens Director of Secondary Programs October 17, 2013 Academy for Science and Foreign Language IB Programs Primary Years Programme Middle Years Programme Jeanne Greer Principal Susan Bird ASFL IB Teacher Primary Years Programme (PYP) at ASFL PYP focuses on the heart as well as the mind. • Challenges students to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate in academics. • Introduces students to the Learner Profile which will continue with them as they progress through IB to the 12th Grade. • All students in grades Pre-K through 5 are included in the Programme. • Curriculum is concept and inquiry based. • Transdisciplinary units created under six organizing themes: Who we are; Where we are in place and time; How we express ourselves; How the world works; How we organize ourselves; Sharing the planet. • Horizontal planning/Vertical planning to ensure all concepts/skills taught. • Authorized as an IB World School January 2011. • Evaluation in 2015. 3 Middle Years Programme (MYP) at ASFL a five year programme ASFL Columbia High School • Includes all students in grades 6-8 • Includes all students in grades 9-10 • Partnered with CHS to allow for a transition from middle to high school within the same IB Programme. • Accepts all ASFL students into the MYP Programme • 8 subjects: Students receive instruction for at least 50 hours per year in each subject. • 8 subjects: Each has a 50 hour minimum instruction time with some flexibility in 10th grade. • Curriculum is designed by teachers and focuses on concept based learning that results in authentic, project based assessments. • Curriculum aligns vertically across grade levels within each subject. Collaboration is required to align subjects. ASFL and CHS • Students aspire to achieve attributes in the Learner Profile that contribute to the education of the whole child. These character traits include: Caring, Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Communicator, Open-Minded, Balanced, Principled, Risk-Taker, Reflective, and Thinker. • Teachers develop interdisciplinary units of study that encourage an understanding of the connections between academic disciplines. • Authorized by IB in March, 2011 • Evaluation occurs across the partnership in 2015 • Service is a key component for all MYP students. • Culminates with the completion of the Personal Project in 10th grade Technology in Science at ASFL • Elementary Lab • Kinders in Lab • Future City • Robotics • Chemistry Troup 6 Language Acquisition at ASFL Grades P-5 participate in French classes. German Primary French MYP students select a language to study throughout the 5 year programme.
