How did you do
last time?
Follow it for
this Lab
• Day 2: Group Research Project using data collected from all the biology
students:
• Your group has been given the task to research and make recommendations
concerning the trees on the Riverside campus – your group can choose to be
arborists, forestry experts, plant biologists etc.
• With your group pick a research question to investigate using the data collected
from all the biology students. See VISION for the excel spreadsheet with the data.
Make sure to go back and include in your notebook

Research Question #2
Alternative hypothesis (Ha) and Null Hypothesis (Ho)
Experimental groups (independent variable)
Dependent variable (what you are measuring)
Control
• Determine some descriptive statistics to use on the data (mean, median, mode
etc).
• Make a graph on Create a Graph (https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/) or
Excel to add to your brochure.
• Determine results and conclusions and make recommendations to Riverside HS
administration.
OTTW: Make a brochure for your company to inform the administration of your
findings and to highlight your recommendations. Go to the class VISION page
and open the document RVHLandscapingBrochureTemplete.ppt.
Add information and pictures to the power point template
Save as you add information.
If you want to share this document with your group so that you can work on it at the same
time but in different locations you can use the OneDrive or Google docs
Print out your brochure in color and submit to your teacher. Make sure to
select under Printer properties – print two sided, flip on the short edge
Lab Research Notebook Checkpoint (finishing touches):

Remember you have a Research Notebook Guide…
Riverside Research Biology
Research Laboratory Notebook and Scientific Argumentation
If you have build a perfect demonstration do not remove all traces of the
scaffolding by which you have raised it
Clark Maxwell
This year in Research Biology you will be participating in several inquiry-based,
guided research experiences. These experiences will help you to develop your
research skill in a manner that is similar to what you will experience in AP level
science courses and in college level professional scientific research.
Your Research Based Activities comprise 25% or your Biology grade. Most
Research Labs will have the following components:
A research notebook
Scientific Argumentation document (turned in by TurnItIn.com)
Project/Activities
Research Model
In your groups..
• Decide your question
• Make your plan
• Individually you complete your notebooks
• Together as a group you complete the brochure
Also be sure to find the resources on the class website and ask Mrs. Papaleo
any questions now to let her know you are working diligently. Last minute emails are not an acceptable method of communication

Fill in the Model above with things that effect the

How did we determine our
findings?
Procedures…
Write a brief description of what you did during this
research project (your procedures). Be sure to include:
1. Description of the initial data collection with your group.
2. Explanation of your research question using the data
from all the classes.
Recommendation to Riverside High School:
What recommendations would you make to Riverside High
School to ensure the growth of the trees on the school
campus?
Also, add recommendations that specifically answer your
research question - what did your findings discover that
would help the landscapers to care for the trees?
What future studies or questions could help the
administration at Riverside HS ensure that the trees will
remain healthy in the coming years.

Results of Study:
Add information about your results here in
bulleted form. Information to add include:
summary of results; Statistics (means,
modes, medians); explanation of the data
in the graph/chart that you added.
Conclusions:
Add your results and conclusions here.
You could include a bulleted list of your
groups findings.
Or just summarize your finer points in a
few concise paragraphs.
We know you could go on for hours about
how great your study is to Riverside (And
we don’t blame you—you’re amazing!)
Just remember that this is marketing—if
you want to grab their attention, keep it
brief, friendly, and readable.
Student Understandings
•Vocabulary (Angiosperm, Biodiversity, etc.(
•Write 1-2 sentences about why you think the lab is
important to our understanding of science.
Experimental Design
•Research Question
•Hypotheses: Null and Alternative
•Independent Variable WITH
Experimental Group
•Dependent Variable (units when
appropriate)
•Control Group
•Constants
Procedures:
1. Open the GeoForm
2. Find your tree with the correct number (silver tag)
3. Mark the GPS coordinates on the ESRI collector APP
4. Take a picture of the tree
5. Possibly take a picture of your group with the tree (this is your
company photo)
6. Take a leaf sample (one is enough) – put in plastic bag and label the
bag
7. Take a picture of the leaf with LeafSnap and identify the type of tree
8.

Measure the tree’s circumference 1 Meter from the base
Measure the height of the tree – (instructions in
Directions)
Record Health of the tree: Good (G); Fair (F); Poor (P);
Dead (D)
Record any Observations – trees planted in a sidewalk
(SWLK), trees planted in an area less than 1m wide (<1m),
trees planted in an area greater than 1m wide (>1m),
trees planted in a lawn area (LWN)
Add the location of the tree (stand next to the tree trunk
and select Lat/Lon)
Click SUBMIT to add the information.
Also record Data in the data table found in the Directions
Packet (this will go in notebook eventually)
Materials:
1. lab notebook (each member needs one)
2. something to write in your notebook with (pencil preferred)
3. plastic bags to collect leafs
4. sharpie
5. tape measurer
6. cell phone for APPS and to take pictures (to be used in your
brochure)
Don’t forget…
• Table Data Page – include the trees you measured (table from lab
instructions)
• Graph Page – hand draw or complete in excel
• Descriptive Statistics – include calculations for mean, mode, median, etc.
(results paragraph)
• Expectations are higher this time for notebooks, show improvement
See Mrs. Papaleo’s example notebook for help if needed

Topic Sentence – what was the lab about, what was being tested?
Identify the IV and the DV
State whether the data (DV) was quantitative or qualitative..
Include the numbers for the means for each group. Ex: “The means for organic and inorganic
fertilizer were 23.5 cm and 35.6 cm, respectively.” Do include units. Refer to your graph.
A description of the statistics done (what tests did you do? t-Test?)
What were the results from the statistical tests done? Provide as many values with units as
you can.
Refer to the means in your table (Table 1) Make sure your table is labeled Table 1 (or 2…)
State the null hypothesis (remember this means that the IV will have no affect on the DV)
State whether the null hypothesis was accepted or rejected.
What to accomplish in class today 7th Block
1. With your group decide research question
2. Set up Lab Notebook
3. Analyze data and decide how you want to
graph and present as a business brochure
4. Plan what you will accomplish during Ram
Jam Tuesday and during class on Wednesday
I would like the prelab/notebooks/brochures (150
points) on Friday (you get an entire class extra than
