1. Maximise the learning culture of
the school.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the end of term 1 message
where I am delighted to share news
items reflecting a very productive time
for the students and staff of the school.
Every day we see the strength of our
commitment as an IB World school
reflected in the endeavour and
engagement of students in their
classes, and this newsletter shares with
you many examples of this.
The recent reporting of NAPLAN
overall school performances saw
MCSS provide a set of exceptional
measures of student improvement
through the comparison between year 7
and year 9 results. We refer to this as a
measure of growth and across the five
areas of NAPLAN testing, MCSS was
ranked first of the 18 ACT
Government secondary schools in
NAPLAN Reading, Numeracy and
Grammar, ranking second for Writing
and third for Spelling. Congratulations
to all staff and students, and let’s see
where we can continue to build on our
commitment to learning as an ACT IB
World school.
2. Growth in reading comprehension
across all subject areas and years
In recognition of the achievements of
our students, three Year 12 students
have been awarded the prestigious
Capital Chemist Scholarships of
$1000 to support them in completing
their Year 12 studies. I proudly
attended the award ceremony at the
ANU School of Medical Science ) on
Thursday 2 March where Salome
Fangaiuiha-Jones (Citizenship Award),
Connor Richards (Capital Chemist
Award) and Matthew Morris (Academic
Excellence Award accepted on his
behalf)
were presented with their
certificates by the ACT Minister for
Education, Yvette Berry, and Roger Tall
from the Capital Chemist Group.
As a school committed to literacy and
differentiated learning, the ongoing
investment in professional learning and
targeted support for students by our
teaching team is showing impressive
results for MCSS students. The focus
on learning will continue through the
two key priorities of the MCSS Strategic
Plan confirmed by our board:
MCSS Mission
“MCSS fosters a supportive environment of respect, trust and intercultural understanding. Each
student is encouraged and challenged to learn, grow and accomplish personal, academic, social
and vocational excellence.”
MCSS NEWSLETTER - April 1
Open Nights for 2017 are on Tuesday 2 May for the
College campus (Year 11) and Tuesday 16 May for
the High School campus (Year 7). I encourage
everyone to promote MCSS to the broader community.
Open Night is a celebration of our school and is a key
promotional activity for continuing and prospective
students and families to participate in the future plans
for their students.
The College (Year 11) Open Night provides an
overview of the opportunities which are available for our
Year 10 students in curriculum, careers and community
opportunities across a wide range of areas. It ensures
that the students and parents become aware of the
choices available and which subjects are the most
appropriate and relevant for them next year. Students
are also able to gain a better understanding and
knowledge of the college environment.
Thank you to the many parents and students who took
the time to attend the Year 10 Information Night on
Tuesday 28 March.
The Harmony Day ‘EVERYONE BELONGS’
Celebration (Thursday 23 March) saw an exciting
combined campus program with MCSS students from
years 7-12 at the High School gym. This event
celebrates human diversity; and as a school proud of its
inclusive programs and
with students from
approximately 40 nations of birth we do this very well.
See the full report and photos within.
The celebration opened with the recognition of the
important work our school does in raising
awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander culture across our community.
There was a presentation of local aboriginal artwork to
the school by Ros Brown from the University of
Canberra and Ngunnawal community, and Assistant
Professor John Williams. The artwork (pictured) will
soon be on display in the foyer at the High School
campus. This recognition is a credit to Joe ChapmanFreeman, Indigenous Education Officer, and the
students and staff of the school.
feast and enjoy the experience with members of many
Pacific nations. The student leadership coming from the
group of Pasifika students continues to grow, as does
the support from our community for this event. Our
thanks to parents, families and the Canberra Raiders
players with Pasifika heritage, Josh Papalii, Sia Soliola
and Jordan Ropana.
The Magellan Program for Year 5 and 6 gifted and
talented students celebrates its third anniversary as
it continues as a challenging academic extension
for local community Primary School students.
Coordinated by Melba Copland Secondary School for
the students in our local partnership primary schools
(Charnwood-Dunlop, Evatt, Fraser, Miles Franklin and
Mount Rogers), it is dedicated to identifying gifted and
talented primary students and helping them maximise
their academic potential. Our teachers work with
specialists (including from the ANU and CSIRO) to
design and deliver stimulating, challenging and
enjoyable inquiry-based learning experiences with a
focus on mathematics and science.
You will have recently received Mid-semester
Reports, providing feedback on the progress of
students over the first term of study this year. I
encourage all parents and carers to discuss the reports
at home and thank those who could also attend the
Parent/Teacher Interviews held on Tuesday 4 April.
If you were unable to attend and you would like to
discuss your student’s progress please contact the
respective year coordinator to arrange a time early in
term 2.
Members of our school continue to achieve many
terrific results and participate in opportunities to
broaden their talents. Within this edition students
across academic, arts, cultural and sporting pursuits
are celebrated. Congratulations to all on another strong
start to the school year.
The final day of term 1 (Friday 7 April) sees the ANZAC
Commemorative Service convened at MCSS in
partnership with six local primary schools. Over 1000
students will participate in commemorating 100 years
since the World War I campaign, and pay respect to
those who have sacrificed so much over the years to
ensure we all live safely with freedom in our great
country – Australia.
Finally, the upcoming school holiday break will give
staff and students time to enjoy with family and friends.
Please note the important calendar dates for Term 2 at
the end of this newsletter.
(Note that public schools
commence Term 2 on

Donation to RSPCA
In the last semester of 2016, year 7 English undertook
research on endangered animals as part of their
Language and Literature unit. Each group of students
presented their findings to the class. As a result of their
interest in animal welfare it was decided that we should
raise money for the RSPCA. Students donated yummy
goods to sell and were keen vendors in a lunch time
stall .
The group made over $40.00 to donate to the RSPCA.
The RSPCA
recently issued a certificate to
acknowledge the kindness of the class and the students
are to be congratulated for their benevolent action.
Service to the community is highly valued in the IB MYP
and the students generosity in donating and time given is
appreciated.

End Bullying and
Violence
One Million Stars to End Violence is a peaceful global
weaving project that engages communities in a
conversation about ending all forms of violence.
Our aim is to weave 200 stars for one million stars to end
violence project. They will end up as part of an art
installation at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the
Gold Coast. We weave every Friday lunchtime in the
High School Library Campus.

National Day of
Action
International
Women’s Day
During week 7, the MCSS High School Campus ran a
week long focus on bullying. During recess students
filled out speech bubbles with their own anti-bullying
slogan. The aim of this was to get students to think
about what message they wanted to share with the
school community about bullying. The event culminated
on Friday ,17th March, which was the seventh National
Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. School
students were encouraged to make a commitment and
sign a banner which read, ‘WE WON’T ACCEPT
BULLYING”. The banner was signed by over 250
students and staff who pledged to stand up to bullying.
The SRC should be commended for their commitment in
making the school environment a more peaceful and
respectful one.
On Wednesday, March 8th, 50 students gathered for an
educational opportunity at the College Campus.
Students celebrated the achievements of women across
the world, while also learning about various women’s
issues.
Three wonderful speakers attended the event. Tara
Cheyne, MLA for Ginninderra, spoke about her
experiences in the Legislative Assembly, running for
office, and women in Science. Stephanie Giblin from
Legal Aid ACT spoke about being a young female
lawyer, as well as some of the legal issues that women
face throughout their lives. Lastly, Toni Sanders-Whyte
spoke about her experiences working with a Nepalese
women’s art collective that empowered the women to
achieve economic stability and success.
After some morning tea, the students were joined by
some volunteers from United Nations Youth, who
provided an interactive workshop on women in the
media and structural disadvantage.
Overall, it was a very positive day with excellent learning
outcomes for the students who attended.
Dorothea Mackellar
Poetry Awards
This year, MCSS is participating in the Dorothea
Mackellar Poetry Awards. The Dorothea Mackellar
Poetry Awards is Australia’s oldest and best known
annual poetry writing competition for school children.
We encourage all students to enter the competition, and
will provide guidance on poetry writing techniques in
Language and Literature classes.
The optional theme is All Over the World, and the
competition closes on the 30th of June 2017.
Prizes of up to $500 for individuals or $1000 for our
school can be won!

NAPLAN Online
2017
You may have heard that NAPLAN online is being
introduced across Australia from 2017, with the aim for
all Australian schools to be administering NAPLAN
online by 2019.
NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, and
more precise results with a faster turnaround of
information. Your child’s results will be returned to you
more quickly, within a couple of weeks rather than a
couple of months.
MCSS students have unique opportunities for VET in
Horticulture, with Certificate 1 being offered at the High
School Campus, and Certificate II at the College
Campus.
The College students are completing a unit called
‘Maintain a Garden and Sustainable Practice’, which
develops their skills in soil testing, garden design, plant
propagation, and plant maintenance. Because most
plants grow quite slowly, projects usually stretch over
weeks or months before the results are evident.

NAPLAN (National Literacy and Numeracy Assessment)
will take place on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10, Thursday
11, and Friday 12, of May 2017.
Attendance is
compulsory for all year 7 and year 9 students unless
prior exemption or withdrawal arrangements have been
made. All students are encouraged to make their best
effort in each of the tests.
The following is an outline of the organisation for the
days. Please note that the schedule includes time for log

The Garden, in Dickson, has been very supportive,
supplying dozens of free pots nearly every week. This
service is available to our entire community.
During the recent wet weather, each student made a
macramé hanger to increase the variety of ways plants
could be displayed, and later potted up cuttings of indoor
plants that they had propagated about a month earlier.
When their arrangements mature, they will be able to
take the hangers and potted plants home for their
families to enjoy. Ms Termaat

Japanese Sister
School HIGASHI
visiting in July
Melba Copland Secondary School has a sister school
relationship with a school called Higashi Senior High
School in Osaka and we have been running exchange
programs based on this relationship for the last 26
years. Last year, while our 12 students visited their
school during the trip to Japan, they arranged
opportunities for them to wear traditional Japanese
clothes, to learn how to play traditional games and
invited them to their houses to offer dinner and to take
them out for shopping or sightseeing. This year it is our
turn to host students from Higashi. We have been asked
to provide home stay placements for 4 boys and 15 girls,
who are in Year 10 at the school now. The students will
be in Canberra from Sunday 22 July to Saturday 30 July
2017, which is the second week of term 3.
If you are interested in hosting a student, please come
to see Tomoko Honda to get an information letter.

The Year 10 Outdoor Education class went on a camp
to Jervis Bay in week 7. The class camped at Green

Summercloud Bay. The students survived torrential rain
and encounters with a variety of wildlife. They were
rewarded with excellent surfing conditions. Overall, a
great camp!

@ MCSS
At MCSS we strongly encourage students to take up the
opportunity to enter into a range of national competitions.
All students are urged to participate in at least one
competition in their area of strength each year as an
extension opportunity.
It is an expectation that the Fast Pace / Level 1
students participate in at least one competition in their
area of strength each year. As this is an extra-curricular
activity, a payment may be required to cover entry costs.
These competitions provide a national level measure of
a student’s achievement and an opportunity for
extension. All participants receive certificates and
detailed individual reports on their achievement.
Students will need to participate in competitions and or
programs to qualify for “Honours” in any subject area.
A generic entry form and payment form has been
emailed home with hard copies handed out in class.
Entries close on Monday 3 April. Please contact Alana

further information or a copy of the entry form/ payment
sheet.

This year, we hope that all year 7 and 8 students
will be participating in Literacy Planet. Literacy

Curriculum and has a wide range of literacy activities. It
is a powerful tool that has assisted MCSS in improving
the literacy levels and NAPLAN results in our students.
At only $15 per student, the program is great value for
money with significant savings on previous resources
and text books. Parental permission is required urgently
(with $15 payment) so that this program can be started.
Payment may be made online or paid at the Student

Planet both at school and at home. Once they are
logged on, students can access the literacy activities that
have been assigned by their English teacher. Students’
progress is logged from lesson to lesson on their page,
and teachers can instantly see student participation and
achievement. Reward certificates are printed off for
students and presented to mark their achievement. This
is an exceptional program that all students are urged
to participate in.
Honours @ MCSS:
The MCSS Honours Program aims to provide a range of
enrichment and extension activities to all students with
gifts and / or talents. The Honours Program also serves
to recognise the outstanding achievements of individual
students and their contribution to the wider MCSS
community.
Honours are subject based awards and recognise that
giftedness and talents may be in specific areas. The
Honours Program will be run each academic year, with
students receiving their Honours Certificate. To qualify
for Honours, students are expected to demonstrate
academic excellence (see subject specific criteria), as
well as participate in academic competitions, events and
or programs.

High School and College Wellbeing
Year 7
It has been a busy term for year 7. Many students
enjoyed the camp, held on the NSW’s beautiful Sapphire
Coast. In these last few weeks of term it has been great
to see students working hard in class, preparing for
assessments and assignments, so they can showcase
what they have learnt in their subjects. If students have
any questions about their subjects we encourage them
to speak with their teachers, and check google
classroom. We have seen many attending the
Homework Club on Wednesday afternoons in the library,
and taking part in lots of other school community
activities, such as the school musical, and representing
the school in sport.
Lastly, we want to extend a big thank you to all families
and students. Without your help, this transition from
primary school would not have been so smooth. You are
an integral part of the MCSS school community and with
your involvement; we look forward to continuing to
improve the learning and school experience for all
students.
If you would like to get in touch with the year 7 wellbeing
team, please contact myself or Matt Colbran.
Mr Best and Mr Colbran
Year 7 Camp
The Year 7 students had a wonderful time away on the
south coast at sunny Pambula Beach. Our trip started off
on a huge high as the bus took off down the windy road
without a hitch.
We arrived ready for action. The students made their
way to their cabins to drop their bags and after they
greeted the local kangaroos, we, excitedly headed to the
beach. Half of us went on a great ocean view mountain
hike, while the other half of us took part in surf safety
and beach games. The camp providers set up their state
of the art camp kitchen and delivered a 5 star dinner. As
bedtime loomed, the students decided to stay up and
hang out with each other. There was also at least one
dance party before curfew.
The next morning students alternated between team
challenges and surf school. The group picked up surfing
really quickly – putting most of the adults to shame as
they stood confidently, ripping up the waves. The team
challenge was also very entertaining, watching the
students put together, and then race each other, on
Formula 1 style billy carts. After an awesome dinner we
all bounced over to the open air cinema at our
accommodation for a viewing of Jumanji.
The final morning was full of activities from the first
afternoon in reverse. After a teary farewell – we left
sunny/rainy Pambula and headed home, with our
loudest singing voices on the bus. It was an absolute
pleasure to take the students on camp, and great to see
friendship groups widen, and communication skills
flourish. A big thank you to all the staff and students that
made it such an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Hopefully we can do another one next year!
Warm regards,
Mr Best
Year 8
It’s that time of the year when assessments are due and
students are busily trying to get them completed. Please
ask for assistance if required.
It’s great seeing all the students in school uniform and
our thanks goes out to all families of the year 8 students
for their efforts in preparing students with uniforms this
year. This reflects strongly the pride and commitment
they too have for MCSS.
Please be mindful that the weather is cooling and we
would like to continue seeing the great school uniforms.
Just a reminder that jumpers need to be the school tops
with school logos on them. If you need to purchase any
uniform items you could try the second hand shop on
Fridays in the front office.
Also the school late policy requires a note, explaining
their lateness in the morning, or a detention will be
issued to students. Thanks for your support in this, So
far the year 8 group has been the best at this.
Please keep the communication going as it has been
great hearing and talking with many of the year 8
parents. There has been a change within the school
roles, with Matt Colbran taking over as the year 8
Executive Teacher.
If there are any inquires please contact myself or Matt
Colbran.
Mr Matthews and Mr Colbran
Year 9
The cohort are progressing well and currently in a very
busy assessment time towards the end of the term.
Students are reminded to complete all assignments and
submit them by the due dates, in order for teaching staff
to assess their achievement for reporting purposes. We
look forward to meeting with parents and carers for
Parent/Teacher Interviews, happening Tuesday 4 April,
week 10.
A friendly reminder that as we approach the cooler
months, students are required to wear MCSS uniform
items, including the MCSS jacket/jumper. If a family
requires assistance with acquiring uniform items, please
contact Sally Harriden.

Year 10
The Year 10 Information Night was Wednesday 29
March and outlined success criteria, opportunities, key
events and dates. Parents and students were
encouraged to attend and meet the student support

autumn mornings and our year 12 students are wearing
them with pride.
The colourful and multicultural world mural is on display
in the canteen. Our school captaincy team, together with
the Social and Community Work class have completed
their first project for the year to high standard.
Congratulations to year 10 students, Jake Keogh, Erin
Brown and Aaron Fleming on their successful
application to the GRAPES program with Master
Builders. These students will be undertaking a nationally
recognised qualification, Certificate II in Construction
Pathways.
Just a reminder as the cool weather approaches to
ensure you have the correct uniform. Students will need
a school jumper (navy zip jacket or teal sweater) or the
year 10 jumper and navy blue pants or tracksuit.
Ms Chapman-Smith and Mr Di Crescenzo
Year 11
All the year 11 students are well in to their college life
and have been busily completing and submitting their
first assignments. The attendance at the swimming
carnival and their approach towards the studies so far
has been commendable. The swimming carnival was a
great success and it was wonderful to see so many of
the year elevens in attendance. I have been very
pleased with the way they have settled in to college life
as they have helped establish a productive educational
and social environment for all. Parent/Teacher night is
fast approaching and if any year 11 parents wish to see
me please book in for an interview time and I will be able
to help with any concerns or issues your son or daughter
may have. If any students are wishing to change
courses they should come to Student Services and see
me in week 10.
Mr Dunn and Ms Noonan
Year 12
Year 12 has got off to a busy start this year. ATAR
estimate interviews have been held, giving students an
indication of how they are tracking in relation to
university cut-offs for their desired courses. These are
‘estimates’ only, based on half the units completed
towards their year 12 final results. The AST plays an
important part in the final ATAR result. Compulsory AST
trials have begun in order to provide practice for our
Tertiary year 12 students.
A number of students are doing work experience in
semester 1, which is an easier time for Year 12 students
to undertake work experience placements. Work
experience provides students with a wonderful
opportunity to try different jobs and make contact with
potential employers. I encourage our year 12s to talk
with one of our Careers Team members to organise
some work experience.
Ms Harnal and Ms Noonan
The Year 12 Social Committee met and started planning
for the year 12 Formal. This year the Formal will be on
Wednesday Nov 29 at ‘The Deck” at Regatta Point. A
detailed letter about the Year 12 Formal will be issued in
term 2.
The school jumpers have arrived just in time for the cold

High School and College Sport
Our school sport program has been hectic over the last
couple of weeks with teams representing the school in
Rugby League, Softball, Basketball and Beach
Volleyball. I would like to thank the following people for
giving the time to coach a team and give the students a
wonderful opportunity outside the classroom:
Rugby League
Joe Chapman-Freeman,
Glen Buttriss and James
Collingridge
Basketball
Kag, Keegan Matthews, Riley
Furbank and Charlie Potter
Softball
Sally McCreedy
Students are completing assessments in the Minor
Games units and as a faculty we are pleased with the
progress demonstrated from years 7-10. In year 10 we
are preparing for a fun class challenge between all 5
classes in 3 x sports over 2 weeks to end the term.
Students have studied the 3 sports for the term and it is
an opportunity to put into practise all they have learnt.
The fitness elective classes have been working well; it
will be interesting to see how they perform on their trip to
the coast on the 27th March where they will be surfing
and kayaking for the day.
Mr Hiscocks
Executive teacher: Physical Education.
Rugby League 7’s Gala Day
Highlights have been:
1. Both boy’s rugby league teams making the finals day,
2.The girls softball team narrowly missing out on the
finals in the 9/10 competition even though most of the
team were from years 7/8.
3. Four teams representing us for the first time in the
girls beach volleyball competition. All teams won at least
50% of their games and 2 were unlucky not to make the
semi-finals.
4. Four basketball teams entering the Northside
competition, a big increase over 1 team in 2016.
We wish Eden Thomas, year 9, all the best as he travels
next week to compete for the ACT in Athletics at the
National Championships.
Pictured: Eden Thomas
7/8 and 9/10 boys were successful in making the finals
two weeks later. 7/8 boys didn’t have the biggest team
on the gala day but showed plenty of heart and courage.
The boys winning four games, one draw and two loses
which was an outstanding achievement for their first
outing together.
Highlights – Wyatt Smithwick and Alex Beljanski try
scoring spree. Bodies on the line, Brayden Fleming,
Daniel James, Riley Jones and Anglo Burt- Gardner.
9/10 boys had a great first up Gala Day as well having
three wins, one draw and two loses. There was some
great football played all around by the boys with some
massive collisions and courageous runs.
Highlights – Dacey Benton’s try saving tackle on a
much bigger man. Lachlan Williams and Aiden
Richardson’s strong running game throughout the day.
Finals Gala Day
The finals day were held at West Belconnen oval. The
7/8 boys only recorded the one victory on day but played
some tough footy. The 9/10 boys had two wins from
their five games, but were very unlucky not to win one or
two more games.
Great achievement from all students to make the finals.
The boys should be very proud of themselves for the
way they handled themselves over the two days.
Mr Chapman- Freeman, Mr Collingridge and Mr
Buttriss
Our classes are now geared towards preparing for the
athletics carnival to be held in week 2 of next term.
Notes will be issued at the beginning of term with all of
the details relating to the carnival.

Boy’s Basketball (Intercollege Competition)
Boys MVP = Nathan Lynch
The Boys Intercollege Basketball Competition was held
throughout term 1, with matches being played each
Thursday afternoon from week 2-7. College Basketball
seems to be going through a mini resurgence in recent
times, as once again, there was a healthy amount of
entries across the ACT Colleges. Melba Copland
entered a highly competitive team this year, after sitting
out from the 2016 competition.
Boy’s Rugby League 9’s
The first two rounds saw the boy’s face the two toughest
teams in the draw. Lake Ginninderra Blue and Lake
Ginninderra White proved too strong an opposition but to
their credit, the boys didn’t let their heads drop in the
face of two defeats. The third match against Gungahlin
College was played in front of a home crowd at the
Copland Campus gym, where the team put in another
strong performance, building on the performances from
the previous matches. Gungahlin College proved too
strong in the end, coming away with the victory. The
fourth round was another home match for the Copland
boys, coming up against Dickson College. In what was a
nail biting finish, the match ended in a 48-47 loss. A
cruel way to lose the match in the dying seconds,
however the team played extremely well and more than
played their part in what was a highly entertaining match.
The last two matches of the competition were against
Hawker College, first away, then at home. The team
finished on a well-deserved high, winning two on the trot
to finish the competition in 5th place.
With plenty of players showing an interest in playing, the
Melba Copland team had 10-11 players to choose from
each round. Everyone played an important role in their
own way during each match, however consistent
performances from Nathan Lynch, Jaeden Karhu and
Max Xiao particularly stood out.
Well done to all the players and thank you for your
commitment to training and matches during the term. A
special thank you must also go to the head coach,
Graham Levi, for putting his hand up to coach one of our
Basketball teams again. It was very much appreciated.
Similarly, I’d like to acknowledge Louise Lynch for her
refereeing expertise and officiating matches for us.
The College Boys Rugby League 9’s carnival was a one
day competition held in week 5 of this term. Melba
Copland entered a competitive team, which also
consisted of a couple of players from Hawker and
Gungahlin Colleges.
Held out at Seiffert Oval, the boys played 4 group
matches against various colleges from Canberra.
Despite results not going their way during the day, the
team were highly competitive in their matches and
enjoyed the challenge of competing against their peers
from other colleges. With the Melba Copland boys all in
year 11 this year, the experience of playing in the
competition will hold them in good stead for 2018.
A great effort by all of the boys involved and a special
mention to Glen Buttriss who not only coached the boys
on the day, but also during training in the weeks leading
up to the day.
Boys Team: Lucas Waters, Liam Richardson, Jake
Sainsbury, Jackson Donnelly, Jordan Barry, Brad
Bullock.
Boys MVP = Jake Sainsbury

championships well underway, we look forward to
hearing how our boys fair up in Cairns upon their return.
