Observations
 The Leicestershire area has a population of 650,500. 17% of the population of Leicestershire
are under 16, 18% 15 to 64 and the rest (65%) over 64.
Using the ONS Annual Population Survey the estimated total population in 2015 was 675,300. The
working age population make up 62.5% (422,200) of the total population.
Note: The working age population are those that are 16 to 64.

Observations
 In the LLEP area 72.6% of the working age population had an NVQ2 in 2014. In England the
figure was 73.2%. The picture is very different in Leicester and Leicestershire. In Leicester the
figure was 66.8% and Leicestershire 75.8%.
 Over the period 2011 to 2014 the number of those educated to NVQ2 and above grew by 12.2%
in Leicester. In Leicestershire the figure was 6.3% and in England 6.6%.
 Growth over the period 2013 to 14 in Leicester was 7.7% and Leicestershire 1.9%. In England
there was growth over the same period of 1.3%. In the LLEP area there was growth of 3.7%.
 The only areas where there was negative growth were Blaby and Melton.

Observations
 In the LLEP area 33% of the working age population had an NVQ4 and above in 2014. In
England the figure was 35.7%.
 In Leicester the figure was 29.8% and Leicestershire 34.7%.
 Over the period 2011 to 2014 the number of those educated to NVQ4 and above grew by 10.6%
in Leicester. In Leicestershire the figure was 16.2% and in England 10.7%.
 Growth over the period 2013 to 14 in Leicester was 4.1% and Leicestershire 4.7% (LLEP area
4.5%). In England there was growth of 2.4%. The areas where there was negative growth were
Blaby, Harborough and Melton.

 In the 2014/15 there were 9,460 apprenticeship starts in the LLEP Area. 32.9% (3,110) of these
were in Leicester and the rest (6,350 or 67.1%) in the County.
 In the LLEP area the number of apprenticeships over the period 2011/2012 to 2014/15 grew by
340. In Leicester 170 and Leicestershire 170.

Observations
 In 2014 there was employment of 451,900, 63.5% (or 287,200) was based in the County and the
rest in the City (36.5% or 164,700).
 Over the period 2009 to 2014 there was employment growth of 9,800 in the LLEP area. The
majority of this was over the period 2013 – 14 (9,500). In the County there was growth of
7,000.
 Oadby and Wigston was the only area that saw negative growth between 2013 and 14.

professional and technical occupations. This is above the average of 44.8%. Growth in these
occupations has been stronger in the Leicestershire area than nationally over the period. This
occupational group has had stronger growth than the others identified.

Leicester (£475.40) and Leicestershire (£490).
 Over the period 2011 – 15 England saw growth in gross weekly average pay of £28.40. In
Leicester the figures was £11 and Leicestershire £20.10. The areas with highest increases over
2011 – 15 were Charnwood (£47.80) and Harborough (£43.90). The only area that saw a
decrease over the period was North West Leicestershire.

The only area that has seen a fall in resident based earnings was Oadby and Wigston (£487.60

Observations
 In 2015 there were 37,585 private sector enterprises in the LLEP area. Of these 72.5% (27,250)
were in the County and the rest (27.5% or 10,335) were in the City.
 Over the period 2011 – 15. The number of enterprises in the Leicestershire area grew by 3,740
(or 15.9%).

Observations
 All the industries identified have experienced positive growth in their number of enterprises
(except textiles).
 The industry area with the largest growth over the period 2011 to 2015 was food and drink
manufacturing (54.5%)
 The industry with the least amount of growth in the number of enterprises over the same
period was textiles (-7.5%).
 In 2015 the industry with the greatest number of enterprises was the professional and financial
services sector (6,210 enterprises).

Observations
 In 2014 there were 5,045 enterprise births in the LLEP Area (3,300 were in the County and 1,745
in the City).
 Over the period 2011 – 14 enterprise births in the LLEP area grew by 1,125 or 28.7%. In England
there was growth of 34.7%. In Leicester there was growth of 40.7% and in the County 23.1%.

The table below provides data relating to 3 year business survival rates for the years 2012 to 14.
Survival rates are for those businesses started in 2009, 10 and 11.

Observations
 Over the period 2012 to 14, 3 year business survival rates grew in all but one of the
geographical areas identified (Melton). However over the period 2013 to 2014 there has been
growth in all of the areas identified.
 Over the same period (2012 to 14) the areas with highest growth were North West
Leicestershire (6.2 percentage points, 57.4% to 63.6%) and Oadby and Wigston (10.5
percentage points, 53.1% to 63.6%).
 In 2014 Hinckley and Bosworth had the highest 3 year business survival rate (67.1%).
 In 2012 Melton had the highest 3 year business survival rate (71.9%). However over the period
2012 to 14 this fell by 9.1 percentage points to 62.8%.

At a county and district level 3 year business survival rates are greater than the England average
(60.4%).
At a city level, Leicester’s 3 year business survival rate (59.3%) in 2014 was below the national
figure.
