Chemical and Cosmetics Industry
Sector
The Chemical and Cosmetics sector companies consist of industrial
establishments that open on a large scale and that are owned partly or
totally by the state whose products include oil refining, petrochemicals
and fertilizers. On another level, such establishments comprise small or
medium-sized enterprises owned by the private sector and produce a
wide range of consumer products.
This sector is significant as it offers varied and versatile products which
are used in many areas such as construction, manufacturing processes,
metal processing, sterilization and disinfection products and cosmetics
of all kinds. This vital sector also provides many production inputs for
other industries such as raw and processed materials.
This sector is the second largest industry in terms of exports, which
amounted to 922.5 million Jordanian Dinars in the year 2014, and it
offers high quality products that were able to access many of the
regional and international markets for their compliance with
international standards. The development of this sector requires
focusing on investment in research and development and innovation
activities, and working to link education in chemical and applied
engineering faculties with the requirements of the chemical industry.
The Chemical and Cosmetics sector consists of the following sub-sectors:
 Oil refining products.
 Inorganic chemicals materials.
 Organic chemical materials.
 Petrochemicals.
 Fertilizers.
 Pesticides and other agricultural chemicals.
 Dyes, paints and similar coatings.
 Printing inks.
 Soaps, detergents, cleaning and polishing preparations
 Perfumes and cosmetics.
 Shampoos, hair sprays, cosmetics and shaving preparations.
 Explosives and matches.
 Gum and glue.
 Refined and processed salt.
 Dead Sea products (salts, mud, natural cosmetics materials).
 Lighting products, paintings, photographs and films.
 Anti-freeze materials, fluids processing and hydraulic transport
processors.
 Materials used in the completion of tissue processing and dyeing.
Number and Volume of Establishments:
The total number of the companies operating in the Chemical and
Cosmetics sector registered in the three chambers of industry (Amman,
Zarqa and Irbid) in the year 2014 has amounted to 619 local companies
compared to their number in the year 2013 in which the number of
enterprises reached 597, registering a 3.7% growth. The difference in
both industrial and craft establishments operating in the sector is shown
in table (1).

Registered Capitals:
Capital of establishments operating in the Chemical and Cosmetics
sector has grown and mounted to 688 million Jordanian Dinars in the
year 2014, compared to a nearly 364 million Jordan Dinars in the year
2013 and recording 89% growth as shown in table (2).

Number of Workers:
Regarding the total number of workers in this sector, the table (3) below
shows the average number of workers in both industrial and craft
facilities during 2013 - 2014.

Exports:
According to the certificates of origin issued by the local chambers of
industry, the total exports of the Chemical and Cosmetics sector have
raised from about 867.2 million Jordanian Dinars in the year 2013 to
about 922.5 million Jordanian Dinars in the year 2014, recording a 6.4%
growth. It is worth noting that the sector's exports account for 18.4% of
the total industrial exports in 2014; hence, it is the second largest
industry in terms of exports volume, and such a large proportion of
exports reflects quality advantages in the Jordanian products that should
be focused on, so as to be promoted in terms of the competitiveness of
these enterprises.

The most prominent countries to receive this sector's exports are Syria,
Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Tunisia,
Libya, Kuwait and Algeria.
Exports of Dead Sea products
The cosmetics and Dead Sea products sub-sector is a promising and
fast growing one. The sector provides unique products, and it has a
growing tendency to develop its products, invest in research,
development and innovation, in order to enhance its exports and to
tap into international export markets.
Dead Sea products include a range of cosmetic and therapeutic
natural beauty and skincare products, such as soaps, mud, scrub,
body creams … Such products are made from natural ingredients and
Dead Sea mud which is rich with minerals and salts.
Jordan's exports of Dead Sea products reached about 2.8 Million
Jordanian Dinar in the year 2014,
