Teaching Strategy: “Concept Formation”
Concept formation is an inductive teaching strategy that helps students form a clear
understanding of a concept (or idea) through studying a small set of examples of the concept.
As a way to help your students understand the differences between distributive justice, rightsbased justice, and legal justice, use a form of matching to connect an example with the
concept. Some examples could be argued under several principles—use this as an opportunity
for discussion and clarification!
Examples:
Conservation group = rights-based
justice
Medicaid = distributive justice
Equal pay = distributive justice
Access to education = rights-based
justice
The death penalty = legal justice
Taking turns = distributive justice
Affirmative Action programs = distributive
justice
Scholarships = distributive justice
Title IX = legal justice
Organ donor recipient list = distributive
justice
