Players are permitted to touch both. The penalty box, team bench area, and spectator area will be located outside the dasher board system. RULE 3 PLAYERS AND SUBSTITUTIONS Section1 Number of Players Art. 1 Each team will consist of 7 players, one of which shall be the goalkeeper. Art. 2 A game will not be started with less than 5 players. If a team drops below 5 players, the game is over and a win goes to the opposing team. INTRAMURAL INDOOR SOCCER RULES – PAGE 2 Section 3 Substitutions A substitute who desires to enter the game shall report to the substitution area. Failure to do so will result in a 2-minute penalty. All substitutions will be on the fly, including the goalkeeper. Substitutes may not enter the game until the players leaving the court reach their bench area. Infractions of this rule will result in an indirect kick for the opponent. It is emphasized that the goalkeeper must be off the court before their substitute enters the court. The goalkeeper must notify the referee that he/she is being substituted for. Goalkeepers must wear contrasting shirt colors to floor players. RULE 7 DURATION OF GAME AND LENGTH OF PERIODS Section 1 Length of Game Art. 1 Two Equal halves of 16 minutes shall be played. There will be a 3-minute halftime break. Art. 2 Mercy Rule, With 2 minutes or less left in the 2nd half of a Men’s or Women’s game, if the goal differential is 6 or more the match is over. Section 3 Tie Games Art. 1 Regular season games, which are tied at the end of regulation time, will resume with a 4-minute sudden death overtime period. If the game is still tied, each team will receive ½ win as a result of the tie. Playoff games, which are tied at the end of regulation time, will resume with a 4-minute sudden death overtime period. If the game is still tied, teams will have an alternating 3- player rotation shoot-out. A coin toss will determine which team will shoot first. The shots will be taken from the penalty line. If there is a need for more than 1 shoot-out, each team must use a new 3-player rotation. No player may participate in a second shoot-out until all players that are checked in for that game have had a turn. RULE 10 SCORING Goals can be scored only from the offensive half of the court. RULE 12 FOULS Blocks/Tackles and other such contact at the nets as well as slide-tackling shall be an automatic 2-minute penalty. A caution by the referee (yellow card) will result in a 2-minute penalty. UREC policy states that slide tackling from behind is an automatic red card (ejection). If a referee issues a yellow card, the next action by the referee is a red card and that player being ejected from the game. Section 8 Penalty Box All 2-minute penalties begin when the offending player reaches the penalty box. If he/she lags around the court, they only hurt their own team. The 3rd official will keep time on all penalties and will signal the penalized player when their penalty time has expired. The penalized player is responsible for watching the 3rd official to signal; it is not the responsibility of the 3rd official to get the attention of the penalized player. INTRAMURAL INDOOR SOCCER RULES – PAGE 3 The offending player’s team must play a man/woman down until the offending player has served their time (no substitutions can be made for offending player). If the first half ends before a 2-minute penalty has been completed, the balance of the time will be served at the beginning of the second half. If a goal is scored against the team with the penalized player that player may re-enter the game before the entire penalty is served. No more than 2 players from each team may be in the penalty box at one time. If a goal is scored before the 2minute penalty has expired, the first player in the penalty box is released. The second player must remain in the penalty box until their 2-minute penalty has expired or another goal is scored. If more players are penalized during the occupation of the penalty box by 2 players of that team, the additional players will serve their time each time 1 of their 2 teammates are released from the penalty box. RULE 13 FREE KICKS All free kicks are indirect. An indirect free kick means a goal cannot be scored unless the ball is played or touched by any player (including the goalkeeper) other than the kicker before passing through the goal. All players of the opposing team must be 3 yards from the ball until it has been kicked. RULE 16 GOAL KICKS Goal kicks must be taken by a player of the defending team from within half of the goal area corresponding to the side of the court, in which the ball passed over the goal line, including the crossbar. During the goal kick, the ball is not in play until it has passed beyond the limits of the goal area. The opposing team players must remain outside the goal area. RULE 17 CORNER KICKS A corner kick shall be awarded to the attacking team when the entire ball passes over the goal line, excluding the portion between the goal post and under the cross bar and in the air, having last been touched or played by the defending team. The placement of the corner kick will be at the discretion of the referee. RULE 18 DEFINITIONS Playing the Ball The legal maximum height for a kicked ball shall be no more than 10 feet. The nets on the dasher boards are 10 feet in height. If a ball goes higher than the net or over the net it will result in a penalty. This excludes a ball that was deflected. Any ball that strikes any other ceiling fixture will result in a dead ball spot at the spot of contact. Failure by a team to put the ball into play within 5 seconds after the referee has signaled the ball ready for play or by the blowing of the whistle, shall result in a possession turnover to the opponent.
