Singapore Brain Development Centre Proposal for MSIG Insurance Pte Ltd 1 Introduction 1.1 Singapore Brain Development Center has trained over 40,000 students locally and regionally since its inception in November, 2003 with our U.S. Principal’s office in all the 59 States of U.S. Our main research centre is based in Colorado Springs, U.S. and this is where most of our collaborative work with scientists – clinical psychiatrists, learning specialists and child psychologists – is done. 1.2 The approach has always been scientific, methodical and hence, precise, with no guesswork. All our program graduates have exhibited greater confidence, improved mastery of their learning strengths and with the unique capabilities of our cognitive training regime, sustained growth in mental skills. This is demonstrated through the test results from Gibson Cognitive Test Battery (GCTB). Other test results, including Woodcock-Johnson test of Cognitive Ability (WJR) and TONI 2, have also shown improvements in at least 30% of the candidates1. 1.3 Working synergistically with other well-known and reputable partners - in tuition (Kent Ridge Tutor Consultancy), games (Noble Education), motivational and physical training (Ministry of Education Changi Adventure Camp by Camelot) – we have reached out to thousands of parents and children from schools, private institutions and NGOs through exhibitions and trade fairs (Asian Children’s festival, World Book Fair, SAF Day and MCYS Family Festival) and parenting seminars (“Gaining an Unfair Advantage”, “Creating the Magic with your child”, “Unleashing fullest Potential”, “Understanding Learning Difficulties”). 1.4 These institutions include Learning institutions: Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Temasek Polytechnic (TP), Anderson and Orchid Park Secondary School, Maris Stella High, De La Salle and Naval Base Primary School. Government and private organizations: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Defense Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) 2 Benefits of Basic PowermindTM Program 2.1 The programmed objectives and detailed programming found in the following pages constitute a proposal for the 50 students and 50 parents over a period of 2 half day sessions (4.5 hours each day, total 9 hours). The learning for this batch of students will focus on 2 aspects: Cognitive challenge (Brain Training) and selfmastery and social-emotional (Exam Preparation Skills) as explicitly outline below: 1st Day For Both Parents & Students: Cognitive Challenge-Basic Brain Training All the major areas of the brain in which information is absorbed, processed and demonstrated as output are outlined below. Categorized as Input, Processed and Singapore Brain Development Center, 2008. All Rights Reserved. Website: www.brain.com.sg Email: [email protected] Output. The 6 major areas are: Parietal Lobe (Processing Speed), Frontal Lobe (Logic and Reasoning), Temporal Lobe (Auditory Analysis), Occipital Lobe (Visual Processing), Hippocampus Lobe (Working Memory), Wernicks’ Area (Word Attack). The details of how each cognitive skills affects learning are outlined below: 1. Processing Speed – Speed of how quickly information is absorbed by the brain to decide whether it is irrelevant (ignore) or some to great relevance, in which it is stored in the working memory for manipulation. Analogy – Central Processing Unit (CPU) of a PC. 2. Logic and Reasoning - Deductive and Inductive Reasoning Skills to solve a given problem given a set of formulas, principles, steps. Heavily used in Math where problem-solving skills are needed. 3. Working Memory – Stores all incoming information while deciding to transfer to memory bank (important) or delete after an output has been achieved. Analogy – Random Access Memory (RAM) of a PC. Heavily used in Science where facts about Systems (circulatory, respiratory, digestive), Patterns (Life Cycles, Water Cycle, Day and Night Cycle) are required to solve problems. 4. Visual Processing – Spatial skills, the ability to manipulate mental objects in the mind. Heavily used in Math and reading and writing (Language) whereby interactions between characters, events development and conclusions are formed in the mind to facilitate comprehension. 5. Word Attack – Reading Skills, in particular, phonemic awareness to differentiate and discriminate the individual sound codes (or phonemes) for reading comprehension. Words that are sounded correctly will be understood every time regardless of the context it was found in. 6. Auditory Analysis – Auditory segmentation, blending and discrimination to pick up spoken words. For Students: Exam Preparation Skills - Self-mastery and social-emotional 2.2 A Through the test, the students will be able to pinpoint exactly where their studying strengths and weaknesses are. For example, one who is found to be attention-deficit and lacking in concentration will not be able to focus in his studies despite the best studying environment. Conversely, with strengths in word attack and visual processing skills, students should pursue language-based subjects, such as the Arts or Commerce courses in JC, which should play themselves naturally to the student's cognitive strengths. 2.2B With this knowledge, parents will be able make informed decisions to attack the root causes of learning difficulties, often the result of poor cognitive skills in at least one of the afore-mentioned 6 key areas. 2.3 Brain Training Kit Brain Training Kit includes a '43 Amazing Math Games' DVD set and 3 FREE braintraining tools to train the brain for better mental skills. 2.4 September Hols Exam Preparation Workshop The workshop includes the following: ● Exam Strategies ● Examiner's Mindset ● Popular Exam Questions ● Exam Preparation Skills ● Optimizing your Brain ● Peak Performance State Singapore Brain Development Center, 2008.
