World Federation of Trade Unions meets in Havana

Havana, 3 may (ACN) the Presidential Council of the World Federation of Trade
Unions (WFTU) meets today in this capital, with a view to analyze agreements
from its 17TH Congress, held in Durban, South Africa.
According to George Mavrikos, Secretary-General of the international
organization, the meeting - will also allow-, trace work strategies for the next five
years in different regions of the world.
It will also be time to pay tribute to the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, a
revolutionary who made history by its tenets in favor of the poor, he said.
The Greek leader expressed the solidarity of the entity who runs with the trade
union movements of Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, and recognized the right
of the Venezuelan people to self-determination, without third-party intervention.
It was reported that most of the leaders of the Council participated in the
gigantic March of the Havana Jose Marti Revolution Square village, this first
Monday of May, international day of the proletariat.
He recalled that the appointment of Ulises Guilarte, Secretary General of the
Central of workers of Cuba (CTC), as first Vice President of the WFTU is a
recognition of the work carried out by the Cuban trade union movement.
The WFTU is an international organization of trade unions, founded in 1945,
currently has 92 million members and its main objective is to ensure that the
most basic rights of all workers of the world be guaranteed

Meeting, which was attended by the Member of the Political Bureau Salvador
Valdes Mesa, and the Vice President of the Council of State, Miguel Diaz-Canel
updated attendees about the process of improvement of the economic and
social policy of the nation; and about the process of normalization of relations
with the United States.
The battle of the moment is to confront attempts to divide the international trade
union movement, which perversely boosts imperialism as part of the reform of
capitalist and neoliberal restoration, in order to break the identity of our Nations.
For this reason, we are honored to develop this important meeting in Cuba, and
we mean it as a gesture of support and solidarity with the revolution, and also
as a tribute to the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
With these words, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, Member of the political Bureau
of the party and first Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, left
yesterday inaugurated the Executive Council of the World Federation of Trade
Unions (WFTU, at the Havana Palace of conventions.
During the meeting, which was attended also by the Member of the Bureau
politician Salvador Valdes Mesa, the Vice President of the Council of State,
Diaz-Canel updated attendees about the process of improvement of the
economic and social policy of the nation; and about the process of
normalization of relations with the United States, during which - confirmed - we
have made it clear that our ideology, our Socialist pretensions, and our
commitment to the Nations and organizations (including the WFTU) sisters are
not in the negotiating table.
Meanwhile, Mzwandile Michael Makwayiba, President and George Mavrikos,
general Secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions, respectively,
highlighted the commitment of the organization they represent with the working
class of the island, and expressed their support for the struggle for the
elimination of the blockade and the return of the territory illegally occupied in
Guantánamo. "The presence here of comrades from Korea, India, Syria, Nepal,
Iran, Russia, Europe, Africa, and from every corner of the planet, demonstrates
that Cuban socialism is never going to be alone, because we are all Cubans in
our souls," said Mavrikos.
On the other hand, Ulysses Guilarte Nacimiento, Member of the political Bureau
and Secretary general of the Cuban Central of Workers, said that «celebration
in our country of the first Presidential Council of the WSF, after its successful
17TH Congress, evaluate it very important and transcendent, as a continuation
of the implementation of the agreements and goals that were derived from this
forum».
"The countries and organizations that we represent, have put their most
legitimate hopes of our debate arise the answers and solutions to the problems
of the world of work. For this reason, this will be a meeting that will extend the
recognition and leadership of our glorious Trade Union Federation», he
concluded.
