We welcome you to our centre – and hope you will find everything you need! The Papillon Learning Centre Ltd. All Rights Reserved. 2 Our Programs: At The Papillon Learning Centre, our programs are developed from top research in the field of autism and special needs instruction. As well, we consult with Board Certified Behaviour Analysts to ensure the targets and goals are appropriate and effective. We offer a variety of programs, each with specific goals and teachings. Specialized Programs: Our specialized programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual child. Whether it is assistance with life skills, academic skills or any combination, our programs are created to target each goal. Collaboratively with each family we create a list of goals to be met. Various assessment tools and checklists will be used to determine where programming should begin. Through specialized programs we can target the skills that may be missed in other programs. School-Enhancement or School-Readiness Programs: It is important to begin school on the right foot! Our School-Readiness program offers children who have yet to enter the educational system experience in a small-group instruction setting. We offer teaching in a classroom setting, but with the direct support needed. Through our programs, children will increase their beginning learning skills needed to start school. They will increase their confidence for learning in a group setting, and be able to apply these skills once they begin school. For children with have already entered the educational system, we offer a SchoolEnhancement Program. Through small-group instruction, children will be able to focus on specific targets that will help to increase their performance at school. Our focus will be to foster “learning-to-learn skills” (attending, focusing, comprehension of instructions etc.) so that children can succeed and learn in any situation they are presented with throughout their schooling. Social Programs (3 Levels): It is important to remember that children sometimes need extra guidance and support when it comes to learning the important skills that will foster positive social interactions. The Papillon Learning Centre Ltd. All Rights Reserved. 3 Sometimes these skills are not simply acquired, but need to be taught and practiced. Our Social Programs offer 3 levels of social learning for children who require the extra guidance. All programs can occur in a one-to-one setting and a small-group setting. Our first level is dedicated to the beginning social interaction skills – how to play appropriately, how to initiate play, sustaining play, expanding interests, increasing imagination and developing appropriate social relationships. Children will learn in a fun and effective manner and will expand their play skills to be successful in all situations. Our second level is dedicated to intermediate interaction skills – appropriate conversations, initiating and sustaining conversations, learning about interests of ourselves and others, safety, and many more. Children will be taught the importance of the skills and will develop the abilities to improve and maintain friendships. Our third level of social programs is dedicated to advanced skills. This involves more abstract thinking regarding what it means to be socially appropriate. Children will learn how to take another person’s perspective, how other’s thoughts and ideas are different from their own. As well, problem solving in real life will be a focus. These groups will also allow children the support needed to discuss any current social issues they may be experiencing, and how we can help to reduce these issues. Creative Programs: Personal expression is important for all interactions in life – it fosters developing imagination, positive interactions, and learning. Through our expression we identify who we are, what we want and increase our confidence. Our creative programs help children increase their confidence in expressing themselves in creative ways. Through visual creative arts (drawing, painting, colouring) and music children can express their thoughts, emotions, dreams and knowledge. Through drama classes children can also express themselves creatively, and deal with real life situations. As well, drama is perfect for younger children to help increase their imagination and play skills. IBI Therapy: We offer in-centre and in-home IBI therapy sessions. Each program is developed after completing an ABLLS-R assessment. We have junior (instructor) therapist who are The Papillon Learning Centre Ltd. All Rights Reserved. 4 responsible for implementing the program, which is overseen by a senior therapist. Our programs are created through consultation with a BCBA. Parent Programs: At The Papillon Learning Centre we believe that in order to create effective and successful programs everyone in the child’s life needs to be involved. We understand that sometimes the learning process can be overwhelming, especially with the amount of information available. For these reasons, we offer ‘parent programs’ that include a variety of different programs to assist families in gaining knowledge, support and information they require. We regularly offer informative information sessions on a variety of topics, such as: Nutrition and health seminars, financial planning seminars, support groups, “coffee talk” session where you can discuss and ask questions to professionals. Additionally, we know that it is important for families to understand our teaching process, and that everyone is on the same page therefore, we offer family training on our programs and processes. The Process: Once you have made the decision to begin a program with The Papillon Learning Centre, the process is as follows: The Papillon Learning Centre Ltd. All Rights Reserved. 5 1. Initial Consultation – this is a free consultation to determine the correct programming for your child, as well as the general goals and targets. During the initial consultation, schedules will be discusses, and all questions will be answered. Families will be provided with the questionnaires to complete and general forms to fill out. 2. Second Meeting – The program director will meet with the family again, to review the goals, the contract and discuss any questions. At this meeting the child will also need to be present. The program director will spend time with the child to develop a relationship and observe. Depending on the programming, assessments may take place as well. 3. Program Development – After the 2nd meeting, the program director will develop the initial beginning programs tailored specifically for your child. 4. Program Begins – During the start of the program, reviews will be made and programming will be adjusted as needed. The program will be consistently supervised and therefore all changes will occur on a timely manner, if needed. 5. Parent Meetings – Depending on how many hours the program runs a week, will determine how often there will be “team” meetings. At these meetings, all members of the child’s team will be present. It is an opportunity to discuss the positives that we see, as well as address any concerns or questions the families may have regarding programming (or anything else). New goals can be set, and programs may be changed/newly implemented. 6. Reviews – Contracts will run in 3-month intervals, and at that time can be renewed and discussed. Who is Eligible?
