Will you play or study? Would you like to know what Debbie wants to do? Debbie is an unhappy girl. She always gets angry with her parents. She wants them to leave her alone so that she can do whatever she wants. One day, Debbie and her brother, Dick cannot find their parents anywhere. Why? Lady Mirror makes their parents disappear by magic. Lady Mirror is a fairy who wants to teach Debbie a lesson. At first, Debbie is so happy. She plays and plays day after day. But things go wrong finally. Dick falls ill. Debbie’s teacher calls. Debbie gets scared on a stormy night. She regrets being angry with her parents all the time. She wants them back now. What will she do? Will Lady Mirror help Debbie bring her parents back? Communicative functions 1. Express preferences, ideas and plans 2. Talk about future events, actions and processes 3. Make simple conditional questions Pre-viewing Activities 1. Explain briefly the story. Ask pupils what they would like to do when their parents are not home. Brainstorm ideas. 2. Introduce the main character, Debbie. Invite pupils to guess what she will do when the following things happen: i. Debbie’s parents disappear. ii. Debbie gets frightened on a stormy night. iii. Debbie needs help and wants her parents back. 3. For the language part, teacher introduces simple future tense in the question form, e.g., “What will you do?”, “ What will she do?”. Explain to pupils the usage of the tense: to tell a plan and to express willingness or unwillingness. 1 4. Ask pupils to listen carefully to the sentences beginning with “ I’ll…”, “ She’ll…”, “I won’t.”, “ We won’t.” in the programme. Encourage pupils to predict what is going to happen next and tell their own thoughts. While-viewing Activities 1. Watch and Listen Get COPYMASTER 1 ready for the class. Ask pupils to listen carefully to the dialogue in two scenes: Scene A- Debbie is chatting to her friends, Steven and Patsy in a tent. Scene B- The narrator speaking into the camera, asking what you will do when you parents are not home. Pupils have to answer the questions by circling the right answer. Answers: Scene A 1. b 2. a 3. b Scene B 4. b 5. a 6. a 2. To make the story more interactive, teacher can pause when the narrator speaks into the camera. Teacher invites pupils to join in by predicting the next part of the story. There are five segments on the narrator asking pupils the following questions: i. What will Debbie do on Mother’s Day? ii. What will you do when your parents are not home? Play? Or do homework? iii. What will Debbie do? Play? Or study? iv. Debbie needs help. What will Debbie do? v. What will you do on Mother’s day? Teacher helps pupils respond by using the sentence structure: “I’ll…” and “She’ll…”. Encourage pupils to practise the target language verbally. Post-viewing Activities 1. What will you do to tidy this room? Pupils have to complete three sentences in COPYMASTER 2 (Part 1) with the help of the pictures and phrases provided. Suggested answers: a. I’ll pick up the socks and shoes. c. I’ll put the toys back. b. I’ll take the rubbish out. 2. What will you do on Mother’s Day? Fill in the blank. In COPYMASTER 2 (Part 2), teacher encourages pupils to think what they will do to make their mothers happy on Mother’s Day.
