Roanoke Rapids Youth Baseball Association, Inc. Chief Operating Officer – Dicey King President – Todd Lockamon Vice President – Dr. Todd Arthur Treasurer – Wayne Smith PLAYING UP POLICY Policy There are four basic skills that coaches look for in players: fielding, throwing, hitting and speed. While it is very rare for players to be strong in all four skill areas, the RRYBA does recognize the need for all players to be properly challenged. Coaches and Player Agents also look for the right attitude and the increased maturity needed to play up a level. In a field of approximately 200 baseball players, RRYBA estimates that only a few will be considered for playing up. Procedures Parents who want their child to play up must notify by email both the Player Agent for the league the child is supposed to play in and the league the child wants to play up in, prior to evaluations. The child will attend and be evaluated by the Player Agent and Coaches in the older league. By majority vote only, the Player Agent will report to the RRYBA Board if the child is skilled enough to be considered. The board will make the decision as to whether the child is allowed to play up based on the child’s ability, maturity and the space available in that particular league. Playing up for one season does not guarantee that the child will be permitted to play up in future seasons. This process must be repeated every year. The child must be drafted in the first or second round of the upper age group. The child is eligible for All-stars but only in the league he is playing. Moving back down to the lower age for All-stars is not allowed. It is recommended that the child participate in his proper age group if he is concerned about making an All-star team. In Cal Ripken baseball, only the following age groups are eligible to play up: o Any 8 year old that wants to play in the Minor League. o Any 10 year old that wants to play in the Major League. Cal Ripken players 11 years or older are not eligible to play up. (i.e. 11 year olds already play in the Major League). 12 year olds are not eligible to play in the Senior League. At no time will any team have more than two players playing up on its roster.
