The Student Sustainability Office at Utah State University offers green certification for events
that meet low impact goals.

Waste
Recycling stations are visible and reachable
Do you have a person dedicated to monitoring recycling stations?
Have you arranged for leftover food to be used (specify where it will go)?
Event marketing materials are electronic when possible
Necessary printing done on recycled or chlorine-free paper
Have whiteboards or use a projector for presentation and agenda
Condiments served in bulk
Reusable dinnerware is used at event or participants are encouraged to bring their own
Reusable or high consumer waste napkins and linens are used
Reusable or recyclable cups are at the event or participants are encouraged to bring
their own (incentivized)
Single-use items like stirring sticks and straws are avoided
Natural or energy efficient lighting is used at the event
Decorations are reusable

Food & Water
Have water in containers that can fill re-usable water bottles instead of offering bottled
water or have pitchers
Make meat an option not the rule
Significant percentage of food is local, organic, in-season, or fair-trade (specify
percentage)
Ask for RSVPs to minimize waste (Qualtrics surveys make it easy)
Food is served buffet-style instead of pre-packaged
Transportation
Event is on campus or near a bus stop
Participants are encouraged to use alternative transportation to get to the event
Participants are made aware of Aggie Blue Bikes, bus schedules, and places to park
(especially free parking)
Awareness and Culture Shift
Participants are informed of the sustainable food choices made for the event
Do you have cards on the tables listing recyclables?
Attendees are made aware that the event is low-impact and asked to participate
There are no single-use decorations such as balloons or flowers
Signage is durable and general enough to be used for many events
