Grade 5 Activity Leaders
Grade 5 activity leaders did an awesome job
completing jobs in preparation for the Terry Fox
run at our school. They were busy distributing
banner paper, Terry Fox tattoos, information to
teachers, putting up banners, doing
announcements, and decorating our school. The day of the run, activity leaders were
setting up the route and check in tables, setting up the gym, final announcements,
and acted as greeters and seating helpers for our assembly prior to the run. Thank
you for all your help in making the Terry Fox run at our school a big success!

Ms. MacMillan
Every year Ponoka Elementary School holds a
special assembly to recognize those who have dedicated themselves
so that we may live in freedom today. Our assembly is a special
opportunity for our students and staff to honor those who have
sacrificed in order to preserve our peace, and to those who are
currently involved in peace-keeping efforts.

“Tech Time” with Mr. McEntee
“Tech Corner” for November Newsletter
Welcome to Tech Time for the month of November. November’s Digital
Citizenship focus is going to be on Digital Literacy. Digital Literacy is the process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology.
The idea is, in an age where information is available in a matter of seconds, we need to
teach our children not just how to search for information, but how to search effectively.
Along with this, students need to learn that not everything we find on the internet is true
and being able to tell whether a webpage that comes up in their search is a valuable reliable
resource.
Digital Literacy does not end there however, Digital Literacy also means teaching students
how to use technology to help them understand and learn and also to effectively get their
ideas out. This means using the tools they have available (Spellcheck, Read Write Gold, Dragon Speech) to effectively and accurately get their information out there and that these tools
are not perfect. Just because spellcheck was used does not mean spelling and grammar is
perfect. Students still need to identify on their own the difference between their, there, and
they’re or where, were, and we’re to make sure they are digitally literate.
Below are some resources to help your understanding of Digital Literacy, therefore supporting your child in their Digital Literacy journey.

Taylor Swift at PES!!!
As part of a Scholastic’s Read Every Day campaign, they
hosted a webcast with Taylor Swift. The Grade 4’s joined
up and watched the webcast where Taylor Swift talked
about her favourite books, why she liked to read, why
reading is important for her. She also took questions from
a live studio audience as well as video questions or questions submitted online. The Grade 4’s were excited to have
the opportunity to see a celebrity like Taylor Swift talk
about reading!
Is your child
involved in
sports?
Healthy meals
and snacks will
help give your
child fuel for being active.
Choose foods
from all four food
groups of Canada’s Food Guide:
Vegetables and
Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and
Alternatives, and
Meat and Alternatives.
Be sure that
your child eats
meals at least 2-4
hours before activity and snacks
at least 1-2 hours
before activity.
This allows time
for food to digest.
Avoid high fat or
deep fried foods
before being active, as this can
cause stomach
upset.
Water is always
the best choice
for staying hydrated. Although
sports drinks re-
place water and
minerals lost in
sweat, they are
also high in sugar.
They are meant
to be used only
for intense activity
that lasts more
than an hour.
Drinks high in
caffeine (like cola
or coffee) and
energy drinks are
not recommended for children
and youth.
 Healthy snack
ideas:
 Yogurt and a
banana
 Hummus and
pita bread
 Whole grain
crackers and
cheese
 Low-sugar
cereal and milk

Exercise tips for kids and adults...
Staying active is one of the best ways to stay healthy.
Exercise moves your arms and legs enough to make your heart beat
hard and fast. It gives you energy and keeps you healthy. Here’s some
important tips about exercise:
 Always have an adult nearby when you are warming up or exercising. Safety comes first!
 It’s important to stretch 5 – 10 minutes before exercise.
 Make sure you stop, rest and drink water if you start to feel dizzy or
queasy or have any pain.
 Keep your body cool by drinking lots of water while you exercise.
 Exercise every day to keep sickness away! Regular
activity helps your body fight off germs.
It’s always a
good idea to
spend a few
minutes stretching before
exercise.

In order to gain the maximum benefits of education, consistent and regular attendance is expected at

The Healthy Eating/Active Living and the Reaching Out arms of the PES
HEART team are organizing a food bank drive next week.
Halloween is about going out and getting candy and other
treats. The Food Bank Drive is about giving back to the
community.
Students can bring non perishable food items everyday next
week and place them in boxes outside the Pink and Brick
offices.
Please notify PES at 403-783-3583 if your child is going to be absent. If you are aware of a scheduled student
absence please put a note in the student agenda.
If the school does not receive notice, the parent/guardian will receive a phone call to verify the student absence. If we are unable to get ahold of the parent/guardian all emergency contacts will be contacted. Please
ensure all demographic information we have on your student is up to date!!! If students arrive after 10:45 they
will be considered “absent” for the morning.
Home-time messages should be received in the office by 2:00 in order for us to ensure communication with
students and teachers. Please make after school plans with your children before school so that they know what
to do at the end of the day.
and being PREPARED
Students learn best when they are well rested and well nourished. Please help ensure your children have the
best chance at being successful by:
√
Getting 10-12 hours of sleep each night!
√
Having a nutritious and complete breakfast before coming to school!
√
Packing healthy lunches that include a “main” course and several healthy snacks!
