Special Inspection & Field Evaluation
• SI required in Canada for non-certified,
low volume products such as ESS
– Per CSA Standard SPE-1000
• FE voluntary in US, depending on AHJ
– Per NFPA 791
• SI/FE label indicates safety review and
approval by accredited third party for the
unique installation under review
• SI/FE done in communication with AHJ,
who ultimately approves the installation
• No follow-on inspection required but label
applies only to installed product
– Changes required updated inspection

Overview of SI/FE Process
• Review certification or testing documents for critical
components prior to inspection
• Battery, Inverter, etc.
• Functional Safety review of software may be required
• Inspect installation to confirm code compliance, may
conduct some testing
• Confirm installed components match certifications
• Confirm environmental requirements
– Ventilation, Enclosure, Foundation, Site protection, etc.
• Apply SI/FE label and issue report
