Lander University has been providing educational
and cultural opportunities since its founding in 1872
as Williamston Female College in Williamston, S.C.
The college moved to Greenwood, S.C., in 1904 and
was renamed Lander in honor of its founder, Samuel
Lander. It became part of the state system of higher
education in 1973. Lander is now a coeducational,
state-assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year
university with traditional liberal arts and science
programs, and professional programs in business,
education and nursing.

Our Mission
Lander University offers high-demand and marketdriven programs to ambitious and talented students
in South Carolina and beyond. These programs are
delivered in a rich liberal arts environment to produce
highly qualified and marketable graduates.
• Lander University is situated on a wooded
site of approximately 123 acres located in
Greenwood, South Carolina.
• Lander has approximately 3,000 students,
representing 29 states and 17 foreign countries,
with a student/faculty ratio of 14:1.
• Lander University has over 500 employees and
an estimated annual economic impact on the
region of $103.7 million.
• The 10-year campus master plan includes the
newly constructed Jeff May Athletic Complex
with a rubberized track open to the public.
• NCAA Division II athletic teams participate in
the Peach Belt Conference.
• The Monsanto Art Gallery is located on
campus and is open to the public.
• Lander has an award-winning radio station
(XLR) and television studio (LUX).
• The Lander University Police Department employs
certified police officers and dispatchers to
ensure the safety of students and employees.
