Scaling up Patient Safety Huddles
Patient Safety Huddles:
A Complex Intervention for Frontline Ward Teams
Aims:
1. Implement Patient Safety Huddles in 129 hospital wards across
four acute hospitals, in three NHS Trusts
2. Deliver demonstrable improvements in ward-level patient
safety culture
3. Deliver a significant reduction in patient harm
4. Generate and disseminate learning about the implementation
of safety huddles that is valuable regionally and nationally
across the NHS
Patient Safety Huddles:

• Informed by QI tools and visual feedback (harm measurement,
PDSAs)
• Senior clinical leadership

Evidence of impact:
Scaling up Patient Safety Huddles
• How do we scale up successful improvements across
the whole organisation?
– Implementation plan
• What are the barriers and enablers to
implementation?
• What is the impact on safety culture and harm?
‘’to become, more than ever before, a system devoted to continual learning and
improvement of patient care, top to bottom and end to end.’’ Don Berwick 2013
