Why Its Important to Have Clean and Green Neighborhoods

Why It’s Important to Have Clean And Green Neighborhoods
via Modernize
Our neighbors and community have a bigger impact on our overall health than many of us even
realize. In fact, the Commission on Health found that “social and economic features of
neighborhoods [are] linked with mortality, general health status, disability, birth outcomes,
chronic conditions, health behaviors and other risk factors for chronic disease—as well as with
mental health, injuries, violence and other important health indicators.” That’s why we at
Modernize know that it is incredibly important to have clean and green neighbors living next to
us.
Pesticides and Inorganic Fertilizers
Unfortunately, our neighbors don’t have magical powers that stop chemicals and pesticides from
stopping at their property line, so whatever they choose to use in their yard is likely to end up in
yours as well. If you are not using raised beds for your backyard organic garden, then chances
are that you are getting some level of pollutants in your produce without your knowledge.
However, when your neighbors opt for eco-friendly solutions, then both their yard and yours will
be safe for all your loved ones, furry friends included!

Lawn Equipment
Scientists in Sweden found that mowing your lawn for an hour with a traditional mower is
roughly equivalent in pollutants emitted to driving your car for 100 miles! If your neighborhood
has yards that are well maintained in this manner, your risks of lost lung capacity and
developing diseases like asthma and bronchitis are going to be increased. By encouraging
neighbors to use alternative methods for lawn care like electric mowers, everyone will be able to
breathe a little better.
Happier Community
Living in a clean, green, friendly neighborhood will improve your physical and mental health!
Depression rates are shown to be significantly lower in neighborhoods where residents are
empowered to take action in the well-being of the community. And since most people who care
about the planet are prone to be outside in it more, those relationships are certain to blossom!

Safer Community
Researchers at the University of Illinois discovered that citizens who have close relationships
with their neighbors have a greater sense of safety and community than those who do not. With
everyone looking out for each other, reports of robberies and violence plummet. Plus, as your
friendships grow you can begin to impact the world even more than you could alone by forming
carpools, dividing bulk purchases, and starting a community garden.
So get out there, meet your neighbors, and start encouraging everyone to be as clean and
green as possible!
