Being Creative
Suggested links
This activity is designed to help adults identify learning opportunities
through CBeebies songs. Show Link 1Songs and how to navigate.
Building on parent’s knowledge from previous weeks on the EYFS 7
areas of learning, using the grid (HO1) ask parents to choose
Cbeebies songs and match to areas of learning. This could be done
collaboratively or as a BINGO game. (N.B. some songs may cover
more than one area of learning- most will.)
Feedback should focus on how watching with children and singing
along to the songs can create talk and play opportunities.
Key messages would include how songs support communication and
language development, increasing vocabulary and developing
listening skills.
Adults and children together: If children are present, adults and children
can sing along to the songs together.
Stage 2: Investigating target skills

Resources
HO1: BINGO
Discuss the different aspects of the EYFS area of learning Expressive Arts and Design - exploring and using media and
materials and being imaginative. Explain that this links to the
CBeebies Being Creative.
Explore suggested links and discuss how being creative and
engaging in singing and dancing with their children supports the

development. Show how to navigate to learning areas of this show.
Adults further explore Cbeebies song menu and navigate to songs by
show.
Give out HO2 and ask parents to choose one of the articles to read
and briefly discuss. Learning about different sounds supports the key
communication strategy for this module, and Singing to baby explains
how singing supports language development. Ask parents to talk
about what they already do at home, and what new ideas the articles
give for them to try at home.
Stage 3: Skills focus and materials development



Show how to navigate to Link 2 Make and colour Cbeebies page
and demonstrate how to use the side menu .Show how to choose
viewing A-Z, or theme and to display all options to find relevant
activity e.g. Carnival theme
Reinforce that viewing together can promote off-screen play and
creative activities – and how this supports learning and development.
Adults (with children if present) select their own activities to explore.
N.B. the activities are a suggestion - practitioners to adapt activities
as appropriate.
Adults and children together:




Give out HO 3 Carnival.
Make one of the Carnival instruments, hat or mask together
Choose one of the songs from earlier to perform using instruments
and dressing up props
Reinforce message of using gesture to support key vocabulary

Stage 4: Reflection and planning
 Explore Link 3 Make and colour Cbeebies page.
 Give out HO4.
 Ask parents to choose another activity to make and use with children
at home. Parents and children could put on a show together. Ask
parents to give a reason for their choice – Why would your child like
it? What skills can it help develop? How can you adapt it to make it
easier/harder?
 Ask parents to try out the activity before the next session and to feed
back how it went. They could bring along the things they have made
to show.
 Show Link 4 Schedule and ask parents to plan to watch one
CBeebies show together with their child this week.

Hand-out 2: Being Creative
EYFS area of learning and development
CBeebies learning area
Expressive Arts and Design involves
guiding children to explore their creativity
through using different media and materials.
Children develop their imagination and are
able to express their ideas, thoughts and
feelings through design and technology, art,
music, dance, role play and stories
Being Creative is about having fun with your
child when drawing, designing and making
things, dancing and singing, listening to
music and using your imagination.
Children need to explore and express their
own ideas in different ways, using all of their
senses. These ideas can be inspired by
anything and everything around them and
there is no right or wrong answer.
Things you can do to help






Talk about the things your child can hear, smell, see and touch, using
describing words
Help your child to become more aware of their senses through everyday
routines, like bath time, cooking and eating together
Gather a collection of old wrapping paper, birthday cards, photographs, sweet
wrappers and recycled materials and let your child create simple pictures and
models
Sing along and dance to favourite songs together, and make up songs and
rhymes ( e.g. you can change the words of your favourites to add your child’s
name)
Sing action songs and rhymes to reinforce key words e.g. “Heads, shoulders,
knees and toes”
Gather a collection of old hats, bags, purses, scarves and clothes your child
can dress up in and let them create stories and pretend games. They could
also use teddies, puppets and dolls. Use an old blanket draped over two
chairs to create a den or puppet theatre

Out and about: The outdoors gives unique opportunities for being creative and
exploring your senses. Some ideas to try


Go outside in all different weather, pay particular attention to the different
sounds and smells.
Gather leaves, conkers, seeds and twigs to make patterns or “floor art”
Hand-out 3: Carnival Creative Activity
You need: a Selection of creative materials
 card,
 glue,
 pens,
 paint,
 recycled materials
 Instructions for making one of the Carnival instruments or dressing up props
N.B. These can be printed out from the CBeebies website

1. Make one of the above, or let your child’s creative ideas flow and they could
design a different instrument, hat or mask
2. Talk with your child while you are making the instruments, hat or mask
together. Encourage your child to think of their own ideas and explore the
materials they are making with using their senses. Remember the process is
as important as the object they are making- if not more so.
3. Help your child to notice the different sounds made by the different materials
they use.
4. Choose one of the songs from earlier to perform using instruments and
dressing up props
5. Reinforce message of using gesture to support key vocabulary
6. Create a record of you activity by taking a photo or video clip of your
performance together- you could share this with everyone in next week’s
session.
Hand-out 4: Planning for Creating together at home
Task 1: Explore the Make and colour Cbeebies page.
Task 2: Choose another activity to make and use with your children at home. You
could put on a show together.
Think about your chosen activity.



Why would your child like it?
What skills can it help develop?
How can you adapt it to make it easier/harder?
Before Next Session
Task: Keep a journal about the activities you do with your child at home. You could
take a photograph and build up a memory bank photo album of the exciting activities
you do together. You could also take a short video clip. Ask yourself:1. What did your child enjoy about the task?
2. What do you think your child learned?
3. What did you learn about your child?
Try out the activity before the next session and to feed back how it went. You could
bring along the things you have made to show.
