AUTHOR VISITS SCHOOL
What a great experience our KS2 children
had on Tuesday when Tom Palmer, a wellknown children’s author, visited school to
work with the children to share how he
goes about writing his books as well as
engaging in a penalty shootout based
around the children’s reading of sports
news prior to the visit.
It was a pleasure to listen to Tom’s
comments about our children.
Tom Palmer: Newchurch Primary is
lovely. The children were eager and
excited to find out about new things. It
was amazing that everyone who won a
trophy said thank you (that doesn’t happen
often) and they were really sporting. It's
quite a school with lovely kids and
excellent teachers.
Leo Howard Year 3, “It was both fun
and entertaining. Everyone enjoyed
listening to Tom Palmer.”
Alex Benson Year 4, "It was really
exciting because a famous author came in
to meet us!"
James Yates Year 5, “He inspired me
because before his talk I never used to like
reading, but now I love it!”
Joe Leatherbarrow Year 6. “Tom Palmer
gave us good advice about how and where
to write a book. He has inspired me to
write.”

PARALYMPIAN’S THANKS SCHOOL
Adrian Derbyshire has been in touch
about his assembly last week, reminding
us about the theme and giving some lovely
feedback about the pupils.
"My Hate Crime, Disability Awareness,
Going The Extra Mile for Sport, Health &
Wellbeing campaign is like no other. It
provides much needed life and social
lessons plus education on community
issues such as cyber bullying, verbal and
physical bullying, stigma and hate crime.
The campaign also aims to inspire the
children of our future to be the best that
they can be through sport, education in
their community and to be positive role
models for one another."
"It was a real pleasure visiting children and
staff at Newchurch Primary, it's wonderful
to see such enthusiastic children wanting
to learn and to understand such issues as
stigma, bullying, hate crime and disability
awareness. I look forward to visiting the
children again."
START OF OUR NEW THEMES
Reception: Our topic this term is
‘friendships’. We are all looking forward to
getting to know each other better.
Year 1: You, Me and Newchurch! Together
we will be exploring our environment. We
have got our maps at the ready to find out
about where we live. The post office is now
open in class as we think about our
community.
Year 2: We are learning all about
Culcheth, finding out about different places
and names and learning about what
Culcheth used to be like. We are finding
out where in the world Culcheth is and we
will be making our own 3D maps of
Culcheth.
In year 3 we are all very excited to begin
our new topic, learning about the
Victorians. We began the topic on Monday
with many of the children dressing up as
Victorian children and we began to
discover what life was like for children
under the rule of Queen Victoria.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be
Headteacher: Mrs S Lawrenson

If you have any concerns about Child Protection or Health and Safety, please contact
school
looking more closely at areas such as
schools, the work houses and the life of
Queen Victoria herself to find out how she
helped to make positive changes to Britain.
Joseph Bowker – I’m looking forward to
finding out about where the children
worked and what schools were like too.
Phoebe Cairns – I liked dressing up as a
Victorian maid. It was an exciting day!
Year 4: Year 4's new topic is all about the
Tudors and Stuarts. We began our topic in
the same way that the Tudors began: with
the Battle of Bosworth. After discussing the
events, we each had a role to play and
reenacted the finalé to the War of the
Roses and crowned our new king. I'm sure
all the children are excited for our Tudor
day (as am I!) when we've immersed
ourselves a bit more into the topic.
Year 5 has a project to complete; to write
a new episode for the Horrible Histories
Series about the reign of the Plantagenats.
The class all have roles (Miss Gilberts and
Mrs Storey are the producers of course!)
and will be researching and explaining this
powerful dynasty.
Don’t forget next week is our makers of
History day.
MILLE SOIXANTE SIX – NORMAN INVASION
The children of Year 6 looked superb on
Monday as they began their new topic all
about the Norman invasion of 1066. They
kicked off their topic by learning all about
the reasons for the battle and then got the
chance to fight for their given side. The
children were split into Normans and Anglo
Saxons and took part in an archery
competition on the playground. For a first
go, the children were amazing, though I
wouldn’t want to stand behind the target
when they were firing.
We have lots more to learn about from the
Bayeux tapestry and Doomsday Book to
the horrors of William’s reign. Check out
our class flower on the website for more
information.
WELL DONE CORNER
Congratulations and good luck to Ella
Xenos, Sophie de Jong, Alicia Cairns
and Phoebe Cairns for being selected to
represent Great Britain in the Helsinki
World Gymnaestrada July 2015.
Also to Megan Hubbe for first place (out
of 50 teams) in her recent morris
dancing competition.
Tasty Tuck Award
How healthy is your child’s snack? Our
recent litter collection shows that snacks
are not as healthy as we would like. We
would like to work towards the ‘Tasty Tuck
Award’, and so please could you ensure
your child has a healthy, nutritious snack
for their morning break time. As an
alternative to crisps, chocolate bars and
sweets, please provide them with fruit,
cereal bars and dried fruit. Toast, milk and
fruit juices can be purchased from school
every day at a cost of £2.50 a week.
Uniform
It has come to our attention that some
children are coming to school wearing nail
varnish. Of course we appreciate that as
children grow up they want to wear nail
varnish at the weekend. However, it is not
school policy to wear nail varnish and
would appreciate it if you could ensure
your child has removed their nail varnish
prior to the school week. Thanks.
Many thanks to the children who wear the
correct school uniform every day. It really
does make a difference to the appearance
of the children. Can I just reiterate that
football kits are not acceptable for PE
lessons; children should be in a plain white
t-shirt and black shorts.
From now on, a text will be sent home to
let you know your child has not worn the
correct school uniform. Thanks in
anticipation of your valued support.
PLEASE SHARE ANY FUNDRAISING IDEAS
ON THE LIST ON THE NOTICE BOARD IN
THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM.
