Notes- 7.4 Angles of Elevation and Depression
What do you notice about the angle of depression and the angle of elevation?
Example 1: Suppose your school is building a stage. The stage will be 30 feet long from front to
back, with a total rise of 2 feet. It needs to have an angle of elevation of 5 degrees or less. Is
the stage you are building within the range?
Example 2: From a point 80 m from the base of a tower, the angle of elevation to the tip of the
tower is 28º. How tall is the tower?
Example 3: A ladder that is 20 ft. long is leaning against the side of a building. If the angle
formed between the ladder and the ground is 75º. How far is the bottom of the ladder from
the base of the building?
Example 4: Bob is on top of a 60 foot building. He looks down and sees his car. The angle of
depression to his car is 8 degrees. What is the horizontal distance between the building and his
car?
Example 5: The flagpole in Terry’s schoolyard is 42 ft tall. On a sunny day, the flagpole casts a
shadow 20 ft long. What is the angle of elevation of the sun at that moment? Round to the
nearest tenth of a degree.
Example 6: Kurt leans a 20-ft-long ladder against the side of his house. The ladder reaches to a
height of 18.9 feet up the side of the house. What is the angle of elevation of the ladder to
the nearest tenth of a degree?
