Summer holidays @ Fort Apache
Thanks to funding from Reaching Communities, Community
First and Awards for All, Play Torbay was able to provide free
activity and play sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Saturdays, with a trip day every Thursday, for a 5 week period
over the summer holidays.
We were pleased to see lots of new
families join us over the summer and
were glad that many parents stayed
and played with us, or came along on
trips. We held a coffee morning at the
Windmill Centre to thank all our parent
volunteers and parents now want to
join our Friends of Fort Apache (FOFA)
group. Fort Apache this term :
Saturdays from 9.30-1pm.
Wednesday 23 Oct, 5pm, Puppet show from FUNK at the
Windmill centre.
Wednesday 30th Oct – Play session at Fort Apache 10-3pm
Thursday 31st Oct 7-9pm – Spooky fancy dress, Halloween
Disco at the Windmill Centre
Saturday 2nd November, trip to Cockington Court to see Play
Torbays Quest, ‘Secrets’. An event that children and young
people are working to create with Play Torbay and other artists.

If YOU weren’t there, who would care?
• Yvette juggles a busy job with giving practical help to her mother-in-law
• Marjorie looks after her husband, who has dementia
• Brian and his wife care for their daughter and Brian’s mother
• Tanya assists her father, who lives with her
What do they all have in common?
Peace of mind - because they all carry the Carers
Emergency card, which means if they were
suddenly unable to get home, someone would be
on hand for the person they care for.
These are all Torbay residents who look after
someone who couldn’t manage without them.
If you are an unpaid carer, we can make things easier for you in many
ways, including giving you peace of mind with a free Carers Emergency
Card, discounts from local shops and free training courses.

South West Energy Centre launched!
Over 400 members of the public were the first
to visit the eagerly awaited South West Energy
Centre, at White Rock, Long Road, Paignton
during its Launch Day recently.
The day was a fantastic
success – the Centre,
which is part of South
Devon College, was
buzzing with people
interested in reducing
their energy costs, seeking out new technologies
and seeing renewable technologies in action.
The Centre is now open
for individuals, community
representatives and
businesses to drop in,
phone or email the Centre
to find out more from experts about anything
energy related. Those interested can contact the
Centre by emailing
[email protected] or ringing
01803 540725
Other popular attractions were the
demonstration of straw bale construction by TSC
Transition Homes and the almost zero carbon
Passivhaus. Paddy McNevin, the Centre Director,
led the very well attended tours of the Centre
and Passivhaus. Regen SW gave a Masterclass on
the potential for the energy sector in the South
West, and the Centre’s
own Svet Stoykov gave a
fascinating talk on the
Passivhaus construction
and its low carbon
credentials.
The South West Energy Centre project is part financed by the South West
European Regional Development Fund Competitiveness and Employment
Programme 2007 to 2013, as well as the Regional Growth Fund and the
Skills Funding Agency.
