MOSMAN HIGH FLYER MARCH 2014 A school community fostering creativity individuality and leadership while striving for excellence in teaching and learning. A Wonderful Open Night! FROM THE PRINCIPAL - SUSAN WYATT Each year in March we open the school so that prospective families, friends and the community can visit every part of our school and see the wonderful resources opportunities and staff that make Mosman High such a special place. 2014 was no exception and each year the number of visitors to the Open Night seems to increase. Each faculty area had a display not only of resources but in many cases of students working as they would do in a normal day. Year 12 art students and Year 7 special art students were painting or making ceramics, the Year 11 hospitality class cooked the most delicious cupcakes, chocolate brownies and canapés for everyone to try and Year 12 IT timber students were working on their major works. It was fantastic to have parent involvement throughout the evening. Tina Jackson and a large number of parent helpers gave out show bags and chatted about the school from a parent’s perspective, while our Student Representative Council and other leadership groups guided parents to all the exhibitions. The P&C technology committee under the guidance of Evan Predavec and Ian Davies had one of their programming groups designing programs in a computer lab and they also had a very cute robot welcoming visitors to their room. Thank you to all parents who gave up their time and came along to support our school. If you missed that concert on 3 April we will be holding Akoosticum a concert where the music is unplugged and there will be an opportunity to see performances from our ensembles, as well as a huge diversity of musical talent. Camps Already camps for Year 11 and Year 7 have now taken place. In both cases the camps were a great success with students participating in many outdoor activities and taking the opportunity to meet new people, form new friendships and strengthen the bonds within the year groups. After the Year 7 camp elections will take place for Year 7 Student Representative Council members and the SRC for 2014 will be complete. The SRC presidents are Michael Perry, Emily Dugan, Max Alexander, Alexandra Muir and Sophia Hatzis and they lead SRC meetings organise SRC planning days and coordinate fundraising for specific charities. Off to Japan It has been a while since Mosman High students have visited our sister school in Semboku Japan; however this coming vacation thirteen students and three staff will fly to Osaka to spend time at Semboku. The purpose of course is language immersion for the students as well as to experience the culture, food and sites of this beautiful country. Ms Hirata has organised the tour which I am sure will be a memorable one for those lucky students involved. P&C Committees At many schools parent involvement is something to be dreamed of but not at Mosman High! While the school is known for its excellent music and drama committees; over the past few years parent involvement has expanded to include a very active sports committee, a technology committee and environment committee. Well it is very exciting to see the start of two new parent committees in 2014. The wellbeing committee was inspired by a number of guest speakers at P&C meetings and parents are keen to provide resources in this area as well as an art committee; I should mention that Rod Grant the Head of Art was thrilled to hear about this committee. This initiative of diverse committees is a great idea as it gives parents the opportunity to focus on an area of either of their expertise or support the interest of their child. On behalf of all the staff at Mosman, thank you to the parents who contribute so much to our school. Cross Country Carnival On Wednesday 2 April in week 10, the cross country carnival will be held at Rawson Oval. The format will be similar to previous years where students will attend school for two lessons then have recess and then walk up to the oval. The venue for our carnival has to be one of the most beautiful vistas in the world although not tempting for our serious runners. Thank you in advance to the parents who will be at checkpoints or recording on the day. Staff Changes We welcome two new teachers to our school in languages Ms Masselos who has expertise in French and German and Ms Ayling who will be teaching Spanish and French. Mr Nave who has taught French and Spanish at our school for a number of years has resigned and on behalf of the Mosman High community we thank him and wish him well in his future endeavours. James’s art work was also recently used on our Open Night advert in the Mosman Daily, North Shore Times and Manly Daily. 2 MOSMAN HIGH FLYER MARCH 2014 From the Deputy Principals - Colette Longleyand andPhil John Perdriau John Perdriau Webster (Relieving) Attendance at School The Education Act states that all students MUST attend school until 17 years of age unless: They have completed Year 10 and qualified for a Record of School Achievement or ROSA, or a suitable equivalent and then: * Leave school to attend TAFE for 20 hours per week OR * Leave school to employment for a minimum of 20 hours per week. OR * A combination of both TAFE and employment for a minimum of 20 hours per week. texting/chatting till all hours, to be able to attend school adequately refreshed each school day. As parents you ALL play a vital role in the attendance of your sons/daughters at Mosman High. The school has adopted a new software package to monitor attendance and this package gives a very clear insight to patterns of attendance of students each and every period of the day. All absences from periods through the day will need to be justified and students who do not have a reasonable excuse for not being in class will receive detentions, warnings and/or suspensions from school. Sport: Sport is a mandatory component of the school curriculum. There is a temptation to use the sport time on Wednesday for anything but Sport. Students are not to use this time consistently for appointments to see specialists, counsellors, welcome visitors from overseas or attend family gatherings. The Sport time on Wednesday is for SPORT. Whole Day Absences: Should your son/daughter be absent from school for a whole day, the school needs to be informed of the reason why. Usually, parents will receive an SMS message regarding the absence from Roll Call and a return SMS is sufficient to justify the absence. If you do not receive the SMS, and know that your son/ daughter is absent for the day, you will need to explain the absence in writing as soon as they return to school. These notes are handed to the Period 1 class teacher in Roll Call on the day they return to school. Late Arrival and Early Leaving: Really, in all but extreme cases, there is no legitimate reason why a student should be late for school, but it continues to be a problem for some. Parents, please make every effort to make sure your students get to sleep early enough – no Should your son or daughter be required to leave the school, at any time, or if they come to school late i.e. after Roll Call, then these absences will have to be explained also. Students must not just leave the school grounds, without first signing out. Any request to leave the school must be in writing and brought to the Deputies, before school for authorization. The students will then be issued with a computer-generated pass to leave the school. Students Unwell: If your son or daughter is not well, then the best place for them is at home recovering from whatever ails them. Please do not send them to school if they are unwell. However if you do send them to school i.e. they are well enough to attend school, then please do not ask for them to sign out from Sport. In such cases, or if they are injured and cannot attend Sport, they will be attending a Non-Sport room, where they will be supervised by a teacher. They will not be allowed to sign out from school. Variations to Routine: Variations to normal school routine include excursions, incursions, sporting carnivals, performances etc. Considerable time and effort goes into the planning and conduct of the activities. Because they are a school activity it is essential that complete and accurate records be kept at these activities. 3 Each student and their parents are given ample time to complete permission slips and make any necessary payment. The school also mandates a cut-off date a minimum of two schooldays before the activity. For school camps, this is a much longer period before the actual camp. In most activities, the school is working with third parties such as bus companies, camps, theatrical performers, counsellors, medical practitioners etc. It is unfair to expect to be included in the activity when the permission slip and payment is not returned by the cut-off date. Often there is a mad scramble on the day of the activity and this is just not acceptable. Should your student not return the necessary paperwork and payment by the specified date, they will not be included in the activity and they will be supervised at school MOSMAN HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE LINE 8968 7602 MOSMAN HIGH FLYER MARCH 2014 P & C Report FROM Celia Harper, P & C President Term 1 is well on the way & everyone is settling into the 2014 school year. Hopefully your students or you have seen the canteen upgrade (that the P&C and your contributions funded) which was completed in the school holidays – new roller shutters, flooring, freshly painted and the last thing to be added shortly some new bubblers & water filling stations. It looks great – have a look at it when you’re next at school! Our first meeting in February was very well attended with both new & “old” parents. Lots of exciting things are ahead for this year and out of this meeting a group of parents have joined forces to create a new subcommittee – working title – WELLBEING! This group met earlier this week and have some great plans to help parents (and their kids) navigate the many facets of wellbeing. Keep an eye out for their survey that will be on its way soon. If you’re interested in hearing more about Mosman High School’s wellbeing structure and work in this area we will be hearing from Susan Wyatt and the 3 new Head Teachers of Stage 4, 5 and 6 at our Thursday 20 March meeting. We will also hear from the Jane Harlen who is leading this group of parents about their plans for the subcommittee as well as our other subcommittees – Drama, Sport, Music, Technology and Environment. Our March meeting is the AGM and this will run following the normal meeting. We welcome you all to the Library on Thursday 20 March at 7.30pm. SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR YEARS 11 & 12 Reminder: Special Provisions for the HSC and Preliminary Courses If you need to apply for special provisions for the Preliminary or HSC course, now is the time to see Ms Burns for the paperwork. It has to be with BOSTES [formerly the Board of Studies] by the end of Term 1. There are reports and other associated paperwork required to be addressed in the interim, so please do not leave it until the last minute. Ms Burns is situated on the lower floor of D Block around the corner form the LOTE/Performing Arts staffroom. School Contributions Statement of accounts for all students have now been sent. If you have not received a statement for your student please contact our finance officers for a copy. Thank you to all families who have paid their school contributions. With new curriculum and programs in Stage 4, 5 and 6 and new resources required to implement the programs your contributions are making a difference. Of course if you have difficulty with payment of contributions please contact the principal confidentially and an alternative can be arranged 4 MOSMAN HIGH FLYER MARCH 2014 P & C Technology Committee FROM Evan Predavec, Committee Member Girls Coding Group The last few weeks have seen over 20 girls at our Thursday lunchtime group. That's a great number and we're hoping that it will continue to creep upwards. In fact we now have more girls attending on Thursday than boys on Tuesday which may mean we need to redirect our marketing efforts! Next Meeting The Technology Committee does not meet on a regular schedule. A refreshing number of people have expressed interest in becoming involved and we'll send out an email advising of the next meeting date soon. Programming Groups Reminder This year we are again running three programming groups: * A general group on Tuesday lunchtime; * A girls only group on Thursday lunchtime; and * A general group after school (3:20 to 4:30) on Thursday. All the groups are free and we welcome all levels of experience. We meet in CLS2. Any questions don’t hesitate to contact Evan Predavec ([email protected]) or Ian Davies ([email protected]) but did a great job of engaging the kids and, in stark contrast to most educational software, is Australian. www.GeekSydney.com www.RamblingAbout.co Typing Software With students now having their own devices, we've had some questions about software to help them learn to type properly. Being able to touch type is a skill that can make an enormous difference to a student's productivity. There are literally hundreds of learn-totype packages available (just Google) and which one is best is the subject of a lot of debate in the byways of the Internet. Exciting News for BYOD The Microsoft Office Suite is now available on the DEC student portal. It is free and covers the entire Office suite for Mac and PC. As an indication, though, there are some very good free resources, for example http://type-fu.com (perhaps better for older kids) and the BBC's rather excellent (although perhaps more for younger kids) http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing. My kids used Typing Tournament from EdAlive software - which is not free Student Stars FROM name etc Josh Riley was part of a boys hip hop group at the recent National Showcase Championships on the Gold Coast who were awarded 2nd place in the small hip hop group section. They choreographed the dance themselves. He was also in a larger group, which included Taite Williams and Freddie Smith -Wright and Sierra Fairfull and Paris Thompson from Year 11, and were awarded 2nd for their hip hop dance Tricky and 3rd for Rock and Roll. Joshua's sister Jess, Year 7 this year is also a keen dancer. Her hip hop group were awarded 2nd place in the junior group section. On a hot Sunday morning twenty five Mosman High students lined up on the start line for the Sydney Colour Run at Olympic Park. The lovely all white running outfits were clean for approximately five minutes. Then as the run progressed over the five kilometres, the students danced their way through each of the four colour zones to complete the race as bright and as colourful as possible. If that wasn't enough the 'colour party' at the finish line definitely sealed the deal! An absolutely fantastic day out and through fundraising and entry fees, the students raised a total of $1 610 for the Cancer Council. Bring on the next one!! 5 To download it you need to go to: http://nsw-students.onthehub.com/ WebStore/Welcome.aspx and then just select 'Microsoft'. Alternatively you can access that site via the student portal by following any link about downloading. Students can download Adobe products and Microsoft operating system for free for one download only on any computer. This concert is unplugged and showcases the instrumental and vocal talents of our students. Auditions are open to all students and are on Thursday 27 March. On 12 March Drama students in Year 10 and 11 went to Belvoir St Theatre to see Michael Gow’s new play Once in Royal David’s City. This was an engaging play and really assisted students in their understanding of how non-naturalistic theatre works in performance. Later in the term, Year 11 Entertainment students will be going to The Lion King. It so good to have great opportunities to see quality theatre. on Friday 12 September. This is an opportunity for all our young filmmakers to present their films on the big screen. So, get together with some friends and make a 3-5 minute film. Come and see Miss Urlich for more information. Just a reminder, our film festival Mosfest is happening again in 2014. The awards night The Moscars will be Finally, don’t forget to look on the Drama and Music websites for upcoming performances. Sports Report FROM Clint Johnson, Sports Coordinator Swimming Carnival 2014 On Monday 10 February Mosman HS held the annual swimming carnival at Drummoyne swim centre. This was our first carnival for the year so it gave our newly elected house captains the opportunity to lead their house to success. The day was enjoyed by all the students and staff with each sporting house well represented. In the end it came down to a battle between the reigning camps Clontarf and new contenders Athol with Clontarf once again claiming the title. There were also some outstanding individual results which helped identify the age champions for 2014. Congratulations to the following age champions. 12B Jack Collins 12G Georgia Warner 13B Eddie Richards 13G Darby Elliot 14B Cain Bartolomei 14G Leilani Holmes Skrill 15B Riccardo Giorgi 15G Carolyn Murphy & Indianah Rose Kelly 16B Liam Miller 16G Olivia Jackson A special mention goes to the parents who volunteered their time and energy to help out with various duties throughout the day. Your assistance towards the success of the carnival was very much appreciated. The next carnival is the school cross country which will be held on Wednesday 2 April at Rawson Oval. We hope to see full student attendance and participation and hopefully another close contest between the sporting houses. Senior Boys Basketball Our boys senior basketball team played Balgowlah Boys last Monday at Balgowlah in round one of the NSW Shell Cup. Up against a much taller team, Mosman had too much speed and finesse for Balgowlah and led most of the way. Matt Mumford was the leading scorer but was assisted by his other Year 12 team mates, Conrad Nangla and Jasper Powrie. The remaining team members were boys in our Year 9 GAT squad. Reggie Hore-Gibson, Jake Sagi, Josh Jerome, Lachlan Beverley and Adam Brown. These boys played fantastic defence and supported their senior players in brilliant fashion. Reggie controlled the tempo at the point guard position and Jake hit 2 key jump shots. Final Score 36-32. Mosman moves to round 2 vs Tuggerah Lakes at 10.30 am at Rooftop on Thursday 20 March and training continues on Friday afternoons. 6 Girls Open Soccer The girls open soccer team made a great start to their season beating Hunters Hill High School 3-0 in the first round of knock out. Tara Murphy scored two goals with great composure as always, and the third coming from Darby Elliot of Year 7, who played exceptionally well against senior players. The girls were confident throughout and played extremely well as a team. Bring on round 2 vs Macarthur Girls at home!! Girls Open Basketball We made the trip further north to Tuggerah Lakes for the first round of knock out. Despite being an open team, our team consisted of players in Years 8 to 10. The first quarter was fast and exciting and we were tied at 7-7. As the game progressed the battle on court was very even with Morgan Di Mento Scott proving to be a pivotal role in the centre of court, and scoring a basket or two as well. Erin McKinnon and Sofia Robberds also got on the score sheet but unfortunately it wasn't enough. The Tuggerah Lakes girls proved to be excellent shooters and despite being a great game to watch Tuggerah Lakes won 40-22. MOSMAN HIGH FLYER MARCH 2014 Music Committee Report FROM Susie Ashton-Davies, Music Committee Chair Music at Mosman is off to a roaring start with over 160 students involved in music ensembles every week. It is very exciting to see and hear so much enthusiasm at rehearsals, knowing that they will soon perform. The first Concert for the year is Akoosticum: 7pm Thursday 3 April. For those new to MHS, Akoosticum an “unplugged” concert featuring a load of musical talent by students. The pro- gram includes solos, duets, folk groups, along with performances by the Jazz and performance Bands and the choir ensembles. It is a fantastic opportunity for all the families to get together and enjoy what Mosman High does so brilliantly. Tickets sold at the door. To make this evening really successful we need help. Most importantly, we need finger food to sell and people to look after the BBQ supper. Also, we need donations to make up hampers to be raffled. Please, if you’d like to help or have some ideas, email us at [email protected]. Even better, come along to our next Music Committee Meeting, enjoy some free drinks and nibbles, in the School Office Foyer at 7pm Tuesday 18 March to share some ideas and meet like-minded parents and staff. As well as Akoosticum we will discuss what goes on behind the scenes in the music department, including the preparations for the Term 2 tour to Port Macquarie, 10-12 June, and the overseas tour to New York in September/October 2015.
