SUMMARY
I am an aquatic ecotoxicologist with over 35 years’ experience in ecotoxicology and environmental risk
assessment. My research has focused on the effects of organic and inorganic environmental
contaminants on marine and freshwater biota, in particular microalgae and invertebrates. I have written
more than 340 scientific and technical publications relating to the speciation, bioavailability and toxicity
of contaminants in aquatic systems. I have been cited over 4500 times and have an h index of 32 (ISI)
and 39 (Google Scholar).
I serve as the expert ecotoxicologist on a large number of technical advisory committees for Australian
state and federal government departments, EPA and industry on issues as diverse as coal seam gas,

Outreach activities
I am passionate about transferring ecotoxicological techniques that I have helped develop in Australia to
the Asia Pacific region. I initiated and led a highly successful AusAID funded project that aimed to build
capacity in ecotoxicology in China in 2008-2010. Prior to this, ecotoxicology was in its infancy in China
and through the workshop and on-going collaborations with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, I have
helped establish ecotoxicology as a key component of environmental assessment. This work has led to
several Memorandums of Understanding between Chinese Research Institutes and CSIRO.
In December 2013, I was the plenary presenter in an AusAID-funded joint CSIRO-Indian National Bureau
of Fish Genetics Research workshop “Safe Water for the Future”, in Lucknow, India. This led to further
invitations to lead a DFAT-funded joint Indian Ocean rim countries workshop in Delhi in November, 2014
and in April, 2015 to build ecotoxicology capacity in the region.
In 2013, I was invited to participate in a workshop in Indonesia to provide advice on environmental
issues associated with nickel ore mining and processing in Sulawesi for Vale and Sumitomo Metal
Mining. This followed an invitation in 2010 to Brazil by Vale, one of the world’s largest mining
companies, to participate in a workshop on sustainable development. This helped shape the research
agenda for a new research centre in northern Brazil.

RECENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

I conceived and obtained a 3-year research project funded by the Nickel Producers
Environmental Research Association (NiPERA) from 2015-2017 ($250K). This project follows on
from my role on the NiPERA international peer review panel on global nickel risk assessment and
regulation, with an emphasis on SE Asia. The research project is to develop new risk assessment
tools to ensure the sustainable development of nickel in SE Asia and Melanesia. It is also
supporting 2PhD students.

Following several capacity building workshops in India in 2014 and 2015, funded by DFAT, we
have commenced several new projects in India. I am a principal investigator with Dr Anu Kumar
on a 2-year AISRF (Australia India Strategic Research Fund) project developing water quality
guidelines for personal care products (approx $230K). I am currently participating in another
DFAT-funded project on water quality as part of Mission Clean Ganga. My role is to help develop
an environmental report card framework to assess water quality in the Ganga River. Progress
on this project was presented in New Delhi in September, 2015.

I am the initiator and project leader of a Mineral Resources strategic project to develop
environmental report card frameworks for the mining industry. Environmental report cards are
communication tools that enable synthesis of complex information from multiple sources to
provide an overall score of ecosystem health. The mining industry is facing a range of
environmental challenges, including securing its social licence to operate. One such challenge is
to communicate effectively about its environmental performance to a wide range of
stakeholders, including communities, governments and shareholders. While environmental
report cards have been widely used to assess river and harbour health from multiple stressors
e.g. in South East Queensland and Gladstone Harbour, their application to monitoring
downstream impacts from mining activities is relatively new. None have integrated social,
economic and cultural indicators into the report card framework.

I am leading a project in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Industry, Science,
Technology and the Arts to develop a multispecies microalgal bioassays to assess the
bioavailability and toxicity of pesticides and herbicides in the Great Barrier Reef catchment. The
funding supports an Honours student.

I conceived and led an aquatic ecosystem and human health risk assessment of acid sulfate soils
($200K) in the Lower Murray, SA. This was in response to an urgent national need as drought
had led to lowered water levels, soil oxidation and potential metal and acidity release into
surface waters. This was a highly political and sensitive issue that has attracted widespread
media publicity.

I was commissioned by Woodside’s consultants to monitor the long-term impacts of produced
formation waters (PFWs) and drilling muds on marine biota using tropical toxicity tests to
9
determine required dilutions for safe discharge (>$1M). This necessitated detailed
understanding of the chemical mixtures used, their persistence in the marine environment and
toxicity tracking over time. Toxicity Identification Evaluation protocols developed with local
species were used to identify chemicals responsible for toxicity to aid in treatment before
discharge. I was invited as an expert panel member to oversee Woodside’s research program on
cumulative impacts of their operations on the NW Shelf.
