Please provide a concise title for the application.
2. Summary
Please provide a brief summary of the application (no more than 250 words) and mention six words that
characterise your proposal.
3. Principal applicant
NWO applies the rule of a single principal applicant. This is the person primarily responsible for the research
programme. He or she will bear both the substantive and the financial responsibility for the research. Please
provide your name and the telephone number, e-mail address and postal address you can be contacted at
during the assessment process.
4. Co-applicants
You can list co-applicants under this point. These need to be representatives of the external parties acting as
partners in the research project. In addition, co-applicants can also be from academia. Other consortium
participants, both researchers and private and public partners, may be listed under question 9 ‘Composition of

8. Institutional setting
Please indicate in which Dutch (academic) setting the research will primarily be carried out. You can suffice by

9. Period of funding
Please indicate the total duration of the project and the planned start date of the research.
Small Project: at least 6 months and no more than 18 months;
Funded projects must start as soon as possible, in any case not later than 6 months after the date of grant
award.

11. Description of the proposed research
Please provide a clear and concrete description of the proposed research along items a, b and c. You may
conclude question 11 with a list of literature references used in the text of question 11.
a) Scientific description
Provide a description based on the following four aspects:
1. Scientific content and theoretical framework;
2. The problem, the solution and the approach;
3. Existing infrastructure;
4. Collaborations and position of the team (national and international).
It is recommended under a) to pay attention to:
Originality and/or innovativeness of the research question and/or methods;
Suitability of the approach/methodology, availability of equipment and facilities;
Potential for ground-breaking scientific contributions (development of new knowledge/concepts or new
technologies or new applications of existing methods and technologies);
Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific cooperation;
International positioning of the research.

b) Economic and/or societal value, utilisation potential
Provide a description based on the following three aspects:
1) Economic and/or societal value of the research;
2) Applicability of the intended results;
3) Experience within the team with application-oriented research.
It is recommended under b) to pay attention to:
Urgency of the proposed research for the scientific enhancement of nutrition issues in respect of the
themes and focus area(s) described in the call;
Economic and/or societal added value and practical applicability of the intended research results.
c) Cohesion and focus of the project
It is recommended under c) to pay attention to:
Usefulness and necessity of participation by all consortium partners (public and private parties);
Organisation of the project: interaction and collaboration between researchers and private and public
partners in the consortium;
Management of the project: how is it organised? Clarify, in relation to the work programme, how
project management will monitor progress and intervene if necessary.
Word count: please indicate the number of words you have used for question 11. The maximum number of
words is 4,500 (literature references are excluded from this count, fond size 9 is allowed for literature
references)
12. Work programme
Specify and phase a work programme for the intended duration of funding in a clear schedule or timetable with
milestones and deliverables. The schedule must clarify concisely but concretely the intended results (conditions
for being able to carry out research, new methods, research results, forms of disseminating new knowledge,
products other than knowledge, etc.). Also include defining moments in the programme and explain the
alternative(s) that can be used if appropriate. Indicate the names of the researchers who are expected to
deliver the results. In the case of post-doc research, a planning for the research process must be provided
(thesis manuscript must be completed within the appointment period!).
13. Brief curriculum vitae of the principal applicant and the co-applicant(s)
Please provide, on no more than 1 page, a brief curriculum vitae of the principal applicant and of the coapplicant(s). It is expressly not the intention that you provide an exhaustive curriculum vitae; it should be
confined to matters that are relevant to the assessment of this application.
14. Publications
Selection of publications. Please specify a selection of up to 10 top publications by the applicant and coapplicants. (fond size 9 is allowed).
15. Lay summary
Please prepare a lay summary. This should be a Dutch text of no more than 250 words. In case of grant
award, this text may also be used by NWO for publicity purposes.
16. Research Budget
Please use the table ‘Project Budget’ for the description of the personnel and material resources required for
the entire duration of the total project. It’s important to take good note of ‘What can be applied for’ (Call
paragraph 3.2).
Please also provide (in a separate text box with reference to entries in the table):
a) an account for all the requested resources;
b) a description of the contribution from the partner(s).
Explanation for the three types of funding: 1) the NWO grant applied for, 2) the cash contributions and 3) the
in kind contributions. For all three the following holds: only costs and contributions related directly and
exclusively to the research proposal can be can be part of the project budget.
Contributions in cash are to be settled with NWO, NWO will allot the cash contribution to the principal applicant
in accordance with the VSNU and NWO contract for the standard amounts for a PhD student, post-doc

be covered by the NWO grant and the cash contributions should both adhere to this contract.

For each PhD student and/or post-doc researcher (with an appointment of at least 12 months 0.5 FTE) funded
by the NWO grant, a bench fee should be made available from the NWO grant. This bench fee, which amounts
to €5,000, is to cover expenses incurred for the defence ceremony and for attending conferences. The bench
fee is intended for the person carrying out the project but is made available to the project manager. Although
the person carrying out the project is entitled to use the bench fee, this should be done in consultation with the
project manager. Nonetheless, the bench fee may be used at the discretion of the project manager/person
carrying out the project.
