Interdisciplinary course Applied Health Economics – Register Based Studies, 5 higher education credits Third Cycle __________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Confirmation The syllabus was confirmed by the Council for Research Education on 2013-03-05 to be valid from 2013-09-01. Responsible department: Department of Medicine, Unit of Academy Statistics. The course is given in collaboration with the Centre for Health Economics at the University of Gothenburg and the Department of Economics at the School of Business, Economics, and Law. 2. Position in the educational system The course is an elective within the Third Cycle at the Sahlgrenska Academy. 3. Entry requirements To be eligible for the course, the student has to be registered for the Third Cycle. 4. Course content The course provides an introduction to health-economics research with empirical applications using individual-data registers. It consists of four parts: - Health-economic theory Longitudinal and hierarchical statistical methods Available local, national and international registers and data bases suitable for applied healtheconomics research. The possibilities for adding register data to clinical data Health-economic applications 5. Outcomes After completion of the course the student is expected to: Knowledge and understanding 2/2 - have a knowledge of basic health-economic theory and an understanding of how healtheconomic models and associations can be estimated by using statistical methods and available individual-data registers. Skills and abilities - have the skill to develop health-economic issues and the ability to identify possibilities to research these issues by using available individual-data registers and statistical methods. Judgement and approach - be able to assess the suitability of various individual-data registers for applied healtheconomic studies as well as be able to critically evaluate health-economic studies based on register data. 6. Required reading A selection of relevant scientific articles. 7. Assessment Attendance at lectures and group exercises is mandatory. The examination assignment will be performing an health-economic application on register data connected with the student’s own dissertation project. A student who has failed a test twice has the right to change examiners, if it is possible. A written application should be sent to the department. 8. Grading scale The grading scale comprises Fail (U) or Pass (G). 9. Course evaluation The course will end with a written course evaluation. A written report of the evaluation results will be conveyed to the students and will function as a guide for future development of the course. 10.
