The traffic light can be a great tool to help you know when a friend or family member might be in trouble when it comes to suicide. Green light: Have they thought of suicide – (don’t be afraid to ASK) yes, but that’s all – I would never do it! Good sign that things are in the clear. Yellow light: Yes – have you thought of how you would do it? Well – yes I have – I would …. And you hear their plan….this means trouble and it is time to pay attention and help your friend find help for their depression and pain. Red light: Yes – so I hear you have a plan – do you have the means? Yes – I have the ….. (they have the tools to complete their suicide. Now you have to get help – even if it means you call 911! Their life depends on it! Danger Signs: Previous Suicide Attempt or Attempts Verbal Comments (“I can’t take it, I’m going to kill myself) Listen for conceal statements (I want to go to sleep and not wake up, They’ll be sorry when I’m gone, Nothing matters, It’s no use) Other Warning Signs: Frequent drug and/or alcohol use Increased risk-taking Problems with school and/or job Acting-out behaviors such as running away or trouble with the law Sometimes come in ‘clusters’ Sexual issues because of harassment due to sexual identity Giving away prize possessions Making arrangements as if going on long trip
