Tools for dealing with suicide

The traffic light can be a great tool to help you
know when a friend or family member might be in
trouble when it comes to suicide.
Green light: Have they thought of suicide – (don’t
be afraid to ASK) yes, but that’s all – I would never
do it! Good sign that things are in the clear.
Yellow light: Yes – have you thought of how you
would do it? Well – yes I have – I would …. And you
hear their plan….this means trouble and it is time
to pay attention and help your friend find help for their depression
and pain.
Red light: Yes – so I hear you have a plan – do you have the means?
Yes – I have the ….. (they have the tools to complete their suicide.
Now you have to get help – even if it means you call 911! Their life
depends on it!
Danger Signs:
 Previous Suicide Attempt or Attempts
 Verbal Comments (“I can’t take it, I’m going to kill myself)
 Listen for conceal statements (I want to go to sleep and not
wake up, They’ll be sorry when I’m gone, Nothing matters, It’s
no use)
Other Warning Signs:
 Frequent drug and/or alcohol use
 Increased risk-taking
 Problems with school and/or job
 Acting-out behaviors such as running away or trouble with
the law
 Sometimes come in ‘clusters’
 Sexual issues because of harassment due to sexual identity
 Giving away prize possessions
 Making arrangements as if going on long trip
