The Parallel Instruction model
• In this setting, the class is divided into two
groups and each teacher is responsible for
teaching the same material to her/his smaller
group.
• A key feature of Parallel Instruction is that
teachers can roam and give students
individualized support.

The Parallel Instruction model in the
classroom
An early childhood class is working in teams to
produce videos about child-proofing a home.
• Each teacher oversees a team, working with the
students to instruct them about child safety in the
home and what parents can do to make their
homes safe. Each teacher also incorporates
reading strategies instruction into their lessons.

Activity:
With your teaching partner, brainstorm
instructional activities specifically linked to
the subject or program you plan to teach
where you could use Parallel Instruction.
Discuss times and situations where you have
used the Parallel Instruction model in the
classroom.
