GoMath Chapter 5 Overview

~ GoMath Chapter 5 Overview ~
 Solve addition or subtraction word problems:
Lisa bakes 6 muffins. Max bakes 8 more muffins
than Lisa. Which number sentence shows how to find
the number of muffins Max bakes?
A. 8 – 6 = 2
C. 6 + 8 = 14
B. 8 – 2 = 6
D. 14 – 7 = 7
* Be sure to look at the numbers in the word problem to help you
solve!
 Identify related facts (a fact family)
6 – 1 = 5 and 5 + 1 = 6
*Both the addition and subtraction sentences use the same numbers
(5, 1, 6)
 Use 3 numbers to write related facts (fact family facts):
4, 6, 10
4 + 6 = 10 or 6 + 4 = 10 or 10 – 6 = 4 or
10 – 4 = 6
 Complete the related fact family:
5 + 3 = 8
3+5=8
8–5=3
___ - ___ = ___ (It should be 8 – 3 = 5)
 Recognize which number can complete related facts:
___ + 3 = 11
3 + ___ = 11
11 – 3 = ___
11 - ___ = 3
 Use a bar model to solve an addition or subtraction word
problem:
Mr. Stuart buys 11 erasers. He gives 7 erasers away. How
many erasers does he have left?
A. 3
C. 7
7
?
B. 4
D. 18
11
 Find the missing number for number sentences:
13 – 5 = ___
5 + ___ = 13
 Identify what number makes a sentence
true:
3 + 4 = 9 - ___
 Identify what number makes a sentence
false:
8 + 4 = ___ + ___
* You must solve
each number
sentence to figure
out if the sentences
are true or false
 Recognize which addition fact helps you solve a subtraction
problem:
14 – 6 = ?
6 + 8 = 14
 Students should be able to identify key words in word problems
that show whether to add or subtract:
Add: all, in all, together, sum, “how many do they have?”
Subtract: fewer, less than, have now, “how many more?”
 Students should be able to explain their answers/thinking by
writing a sentence, so make sure your child is able to verbally
make sense and explain how they got their answer (don’t worry
about spelling!)
