PSTC newsletter issue six - Attorney

Newsletter #6 (21 April 2017)
Welcome to the sixth edition of the PSTC Newsletter. We are entering the last phase of the process to close
the college. Our final courses will be delivered in May and June. Our instructors are focusing on assessing
the assignments submitted prior to the deadline on 31 March and arrangements are being made for the
cessation of our status as a registered training organisation on 31 July 2017.
On behalf of the PSTC team I wish to thank everyone for your responses to our information requests, your
ability to meet deadlines and general willingness to assist us make this event as painless as possible. We
appreciate your support and good humour.

Director PSTC
History
As the time approaches for the Protective Security Training College (PSTC) to close we thought it of interest to
reflect a little on our beginnings.
The need for dedicated protective security training was identified soon after the Hilton Hotel bombing in
1978. In May 1980 the Australian Government formally established responsibility for the training of
Departmental Security Officers and the first courses were delivered in early 1981. Initially, a series of six
courses, a half day seminar and a one day annual conference were offered to Departments. Most of the
events were conducted from a training centre in Belconnen.
In July 1987 responsibility for conducting protective security training was transferred to the Department of
the Special Minister of State. However, this situation was short lived as that department was soon disbanded.
At that point the training was moved to the Protective Security Coordination Centre (PSCC) of the AttorneyGeneral’s Department. About the same time the site at 71 State Circle Yarralumla was secured, extensively
renovated and became the home of the Protective Security Coordination Training Centre.
In our next newsletter we will continue the history of protective security training. If anyone has information
that might add to the story please contact the college.
Finalising assignments
The PSTC has been finalising the marking of all submitted assessments and issuing awards for Certificate IV or
Diploma qualifications and statements of attainment.
Please contact the PSTC to inform us if you have submitted something for assessment and have not yet
received your award.
Points of contact
Anyone who needs to contact the PSTC before closure can contact us by email [email protected] or call
02 6141 3699.
Sourcing accredited training after the PSTC closes
The Protective Security website has links to a range of security training resources and a list of some of the
protective security practitioner training providers.
See www.training.gov.au for details for training organisations you can contact in relation to your future
accredited training needs. This website is an excellent source of information if you are looking to gain
qualifications in protective security, security risk management or related areas.
Training.gov.au is the national register for Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia and is
managed by the Department of Education and Training. It is the authoritative source of Nationally
Recognised Training (NRT) and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who have the approved scope to
deliver NRT.
