History
The North Holland Reformed Church was organized in 1852 by the request of several
families living in the area at the spring session of the Holland Classis held in Zeeland, on April
21, 1852. The first church building was a log cabin that served the congregation until 1856. In
1862, a permanent church building was erected, but the congregation continued to worship for
the next fourteen years without a pastor.
In 1866, the Noordeloos Reformed Church and the North Holland Reformed Church
merged because neither congregation was large enough to flourish on its own. A new church
building was erected in 1867 and served the congregation until December 11, 1945, when it
burned to the ground. The current church building was dedicated in March 1948.
Services were conducted in Dutch until 1919, when pressure from the younger members
of the congregation led to the afternoon service being conducted in English. It was 1938,
however, before both the afternoon and evening services were conducted in English.
Scope and Content
The collection consists mainly of church minutes. Consistory minutes document major
events in the church’s history. These minutes were written in Dutch until 1922. The One
Hundredth Anniversary Book includes a detailed history of the North Holland Reformed Church
until 1952.
