Teaching in Second Life Workshop July 20, 2011 Teaching in Second Life Workshop http://mtweb.mtsu.edu/secondlife/instructors.htm Second Life Education Website http://education.secondlife.com/ Transcript Notes from VWER Meetings Virtual Worlds Education - http://virtualworldsedu.info/ http://www.wver.org – New site for transcripts http://www.vwer.org/ - Old Transcripts Which Grid for Me? Pros and Cons of VW Grids for Teaching - http://virtualworldsedu.info/vwer/110224.html How can Second Life be used for Teaching and Learning? Teaching in Second Life can be done very simply with very little setup time once students have created avatars and learned the basics of moving around in Second Life. Activities that require only a place to hold class (the MTSU Second Life Island) and possibly a microphone include; discussing and debating topics, holding a question and answer session, holding study sessions, practicing foreign languages, and role playing (role playing could require additional work to set up). Activities requiring a bit more set up time include; displaying class projects for peer review (art, music, clothing design, etc.), working through case studies, game playing, designing in Second Life (clothing, buildings, interiors, programming (scripting), simulating real life situations (medical cases, crime scenes, museums, books, genetics experiments), presenting (faculty to student or student to class), peer review, performing (music, theatre), studying and applying the physics of virtual worlds and games, using math skills to build buildings and other Second Life items, and training (social workers, psychologists, police, early responders - this may also involve creating simulations). Things to Consider When Teaching in SL Important Note: Review the guidelines for the use of Second Life prior to planning your Second Life activities. Contact the Faculty Instructional Technology Center (FITC), 615-904-8189, to schedule time to discuss your instructional plans with FITC staff. MTSU Policy Considerations - If your Second Life learning activity includes a mandatory real time activity, the day/dates and times of the mandatory real time activity must be listed in the Schedule of Classes. 1|Page Teaching in Second Life Workshop July 20, 2011 Legal Considerations - FERPA provisions that safeguard student privacy prohibit mandating students to use their real identity in publicly viewed areas or data bases. More specifically, rather than require students to use their real names, keep a key of the avatar names tied to class members names in your D2L course site. (Note: FERPA = Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.) Practical Considerations - (1) There is a limit of 40 avatars at a time on the MTSU Second Life islands. (2) There is no Help Desk support for using the Second Life platform so faculty members need to be willing and able to provide technical support for their students. (3) Faculty electing to use the Second Life facilities need to provide for their own materials. (4) Faculty electing to use the Second Life e-campus facilities need to know how to deal with a griefer* that may attempt to disrupt a learning activity. *A griefer is a name for a Second Life Resident who harasses other residents. Griefing is a violation of the Second Life Terms of Service. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griefer Gaining Access to the MTSU Island as an Instructor 1. Send your avatar's name to Brenda Kerr - [email protected] 2. Brenda will send you an invitation to MTSU's Second Life group. 3. Log into Second Life and accept the group membership invitation. 4. Come back to this page and click on this SLurl http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/MTSU%20Island/163/97/24 to access a web page link that will open your SL viewer (if it is not open) and take you to the MTSU island. If the viewer was open you will need to verify that you want to teleport to the MTSU Island. 5. Landmark the island (World menu) once you arrive so that you can get back to it. 6. You have been given teacher privileges on the island, which means you can build things on the island. If you build something put it back in your inventory before you leave. Note: If you join another group and have that group activated when you land on the MTSU Island you will not be able to build. You will need to activate the MTSU group before you can build again. 2|Page Teaching in Second Life Workshop July 20, 2011 Tutorials Deleting Duplicate Second Life Landmarks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOL1tJdA3NU Premium Membership If you intend to make many purchases, you might want to buy a Premium Second Life account. What do I get with a Premium account? Ed Tech Instructional Design Tour You have 25 minutes to visit one or more of these sims. This is an experiential activity, so choose a sim with which you are unfamiliar. As you go through the sim and interact with the environment, consider the purpose of the build. Who is the intended audience? What is the purpose? What elements of the sim design help to achieve the purpose of the sim--objects, sounds, sky, exhibits, things to do? Wearing headphones will enhance your experience. *************************** NOAA Island (PG)- Erick Hackathorn, builder http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Meteora/177/161/28 o Upon entrance, grab and wear the HUD and enjoy! What simulations did you visit and why? o How did your experience of the simulation enhance your understanding? What surprised you, engaged you, motivated you as you moved around the sim? ************************* INTERNATIONAL SPACE FLIGHT MUSEUM (PG) http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Spaceport%20Alpha/31/110/23 Get on the rocket and ride it into space. Where did you land? Once you landed where did you walk and what did you see? What influenced your choices as an explorer? How might this sim be used in education? ************************ THURSDAYS FICTION (PG) Note: mature themes of death, reincarnation and spirituality. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife//77/142/29 Upon entrance, what design features of the build do you notice first? How do these enhance your initial impressions of the sim? What feelings do you experience as you progress through the sim? What design features of the sim and experience promote immersion? Can you locate the three steps of meditation? **************************** VIRTUAL HALLUCINATIONS http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife//26/45/23 Sponsored by UC Davis, warning: potentially disturbing simulation of schizophrenia, please read the warning before entering o Wear the badge provided at the entrance. Brainstorming (I haven't tried this one yet) Select the type of brainstorming you want to perform in Second Life by using Brainflowing. Brainflowing, brainstorming tool made by Gloria Gomez Diago and Draceina Pinion has been updated, by including a menu that permits choosing the type of brainstorming we want to perform depending on the number of prims we have available in the land where we develop the activity and. Now users can decide the prims they will use with the tool, taking in mind the prims that they have available in their land or in the land where they use the tool. Thus, person who will conduct the brainstorming, after selecting in the menu the number of prims he or she is interested on using, must indicate to participants how many words they can use for giving utterance to their ideas in the board. The cost of this tool as of 7/1/10 is L$1000. Bibliography about possible uses of Brainflowing. Herver, G., El Kamel, L. and Rigaux-Bricmont, B. Draceina Pinion made this video about one of the first versions of Brainflowing. Available in : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCWDpLd-0_Y Bubbl.us is a free web-based collaborative brainstorming tool - http://www.bubbl.us . This tool does work within Second Life on a prim that allows shared media; however, within Second Life the response time for Bubbl.us is slow. Therefore, it may be more productive to use Bubbl.us in it's own window outside of Second Life while developing the brainstorming diagrams and then open Bubbl.us within Second Life primarily for displaying and discussing the brainstorming diagrams. Remember to use the SL audio. Tools to Facilitate Showing/Editing Recorded Video zamzar - http://www.zamzar.com/ is a free file conversion tool. It can be used to change video formats including YouTube videos (just supply the YouTube URL) to an alternative file format (e.g. avi, wmv, mp4, and many more). Although this tool is probably most useful for video formats, it also works great for converting file formats of multiple types (e.g. converting doc to pdf). All conversions are completed via the zamzar web page, therefore, it is not necessary to download any software for the file conversion process. Tools for Recording Your Own Second Life Video / Screen Capture Software Debut Video Capture Software - http://download.cnet.com/Debut-Video-RecordingSoftware-Professional-Version/3000-13633_4-10684791.html and http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html. This video capture software is easy to use and has a decent number of features for free software. If file size is an issue, you can record directly to an MOV or MP4 file which will take less than 100KB per second of recording. Larger file types such as AVI and WMV are better quality but also take up significantly more space on your hard drive. I have taken the video files and uploaded to YouTube, Screencast.com, Photobucket, and also have uploaded them to the College of Business's S:\ drive. They have played well on all of these locations. If you want to directly play one of the videos on a shared media prim (e.g. play the video directly from the S:\ drive) then I recommend recording in MOV format. If you want to play one of your uploaded videos from You Tube or Screencast then the file type is less important. Debut Video also comes with a video editor, file converter, and disc burning software. Overall, this one was my favorite because of the flexibility in recording to different file types and the ease of use. CamStudio - http://download.cnet.com/CamStudio/3000-13633_410067101.html?tag=mncol;pop and http://camstudio.org/ . CamStudio is also fairly easy to use and has the additional feature of allowing you to add annotations to your video. 25 | P a g e Teaching in Second Life Workshop July 20, 2011 However, it is limited in the number of file formats you can record in. I tried recorded in avi format and was very pleased with the quality, but a 3 minute video ended up taking 1GB of storage space. So I recommend converting the original avi file to something smaller if you are going to post it to a server, or if you just need to preserve space on your hard drive. If you want annotations in your video then CamStudio is a good option, but you might want to investigate its options for recording smaller files if you are short on hard drive space (e.g. change the frame rate to 10 instead of the default which is 40). I haven't tried recording in CamStudio at a lower frame rate so I cannot comment on how quality might be affected. Overall, it is still a good option for capturing video in Second Life. Jing - http://www.jingproject.com/ - Jing also worked well for capturing video. Collaboration Boards and Documents Google Docs - works Microsoft Office Live Workspace - does not work well in Second Life, when testing a Word document in Second Life, the document turned upside down when we attempted to edit it. Video conferencing I used to use dimdim but dimdim has been bought out and the free rooms have been discontinued.
