Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Context The aim of this unit is to enable learners gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests. Task Overview The ability to conduct fitness testing is a vital skill for the sport scientist to possess. All athletes and people starting exercise need to know where they are at any point in time so they can work out how close they are to where they want to be. This unit will start by looking at a battery of fitness tests that can be used with athletes and people taking exercise, and will consider any advantages and disadvantages with these methods. Then we will look at screening techniques and health-monitoring tests that are used to identify whether a person is healthy enough to perform these fitness tests, which can push an individual to the limits of their fitness. Once we have knowledge of the tests, we will look at how these tests can be administered safely and how the data you gain from the tests can be interpreted. Date of issue: 6th Sep 2012 Date of submission:21st Dec 2012 Learning outcomes On completion of this unit, you should: 1. 2. 3. 4. Know a range of laboratory-based and field-based fitness tests. Be able to use health-screening techniques. Be able to administer appropriate fitness tests. Be able to interpret the results of fitness tests and provide feedback. Refer to the assignment task sheet and the criteria tick sheet to ensure that you meet the standards for pass, merit and distinction for Unit 7. There are three tasks to complete for this unit. Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Assignment Task Sheet Task 1 Activities Assessment criteria Exploring Laboratory-based and Field-based Fitness Tests Date task set: 6th Sept 2012 Deadline: 1st Oct 2012 As a Health Fitness Instructor, one of your main roles and responsibilities is to conduct health and fitness assessments with clients. Practically explore the physical fitness components through fitness testing. a) Fill in the following table to demonstrate your knowledge of the tests for the different components of fitness and their advantages and disadvantages. Component of fitness Flexibility Strength Aerobic Endurance Speed Anaerobic Endurance Muscular Endurance Body Composition Description of a test for component of fitness Description of tests strengths and weaknesses Explanation of tests strengths and weaknesses P1,M1 Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise What must be evidenced: Fitness Tests: Flexibility, e.g. sit and reach; strength, eg 1 RM, grip dynamometer; aerobic endurance, eg multi-stage fitness test, step test, maximal treadmill protocol; speed, eg sprint tests; power, eg vertical jump, wingate test; muscular endurance, eg one-minute press up, oneminute sit up; body composition, eg skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance analysis, hydrodensitometry. Advantages and disadvantages of different tests: eg cost, time, equipment requirement, facility requirement, skill level of person carrying out test, issues with test validity, issues with test reliability. Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise 2 Health Screening Date task set: 1st Oct 2012 Deadline: 29th Oct 2012 Implement health screening and health monitoring tests for two contrasting individuals. a) Using the health-screening questionnaire provided as a template, design your own questionnaire that includes: personal details, goals, current activity levels, lifestyle factors and medical history. b) Devise and use appropriate health-screening procedures for two individuals who have different goals and a different health status (e.g. conditioned and unconditioned). c) Use the following table to record and analyse the results of four healthrelated tests for the two individuals. Name of Test Result of test Resting Heart Rate Blood Pressure Lung Function Body Mass Index Strengths: Areas for improvement: Interpretation of test: fit & healthy/proceed with caution/GP referral P2 P3 P4, M2 Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise d) Evaluate the information gained from the health-screening questionnaire and the fitness tests and make recommendations on how each individual could improve their lifestyle. D1 What must be evidenced: Health-screening procedures: health screening questionnaires; client consultation, eg questioning, listening, non-verbal communication, client confidentiality; informed consent; coronary heart risk factors; medical referral. Health monitoring tests: eg heart rate, blood pressure, lung function, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index. 3 How Fit Are You? Date task set: 29th Oct 2012 Deadline: 22nd Dec 2012 Administer fitness tests for an individual and interpret test results. a) Choose six fitness tests specifically identified for the individual that you have selected to test. Safely administer these tests. b) Justify why you chose these six tests for this individual (think about choosing tests specific to the goals and fitness needs of that individual). P5 M3 Comment on: suitability, reliability, validity, practicality c) Develop a table and record the scores for each of the six tests. P5 d) Prepare and then present feedback to the individual in the form of a consultation. You should have worked out how their score fits into the normative data for each test and what the implications of the results are. P6 Edexcel BTEC Level 3/Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Unit 7 Assignment Title: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise e) As part of the consultation, summarise by identifying the individual’s strengths and weaknesses and then provide recommendations for their future training activities. What must be evidenced: Fitness tests: eg multi-stage fitness test, step test, maximal treadmill protocol, 1 RM, grip dynamometer, vertical jump, wingate test, sprint tests, one-minute press up, one-minute sit up, skinfold callipers, bioelectrical impedance analysis, hydrodensitometry; preparation for tests, eg selection of tests, reliability, validity and practicality of tests; purpose, eg identify components of fitness which need to be improved, give a benchmark from which to measure improvement, allow a more specific programme to be written, play a role in educating individuals about health and fitness. Administer: pre-test procedures; test sequence; test protocols; health and safety; recording test results; reasons to terminate a fitness test. Interpret results against normative data: compare and make judgements against, eg population norms, norms for sports performers, norms for elite athletes, accepted health ranges. Feedback: feedback, eg verbal, written; tests carried out; test results; levels of fitness; strengths and areas for improvement; recommendations.
