Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Full-time fixed term position as a
Postdoctoral Researcher within the Discipline of Economics at the National University of Ireland,
Galway.
This position is funded through the HRB and is available from Monday February 15th 2016 until 17th
August 2018.
The successful candidate will work with Professors Ciaran O’ Neill, Andrew Murphy and Dr Liam
Glynn at NUI Galway on the analysis of currently available national health-care datasets. A
particular focus of the study is the development and analysis of care quality indicators for diabetic
patients in an Irish context. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers working
across a broader range of research projects funded under an HRB Research Leader Award held
by Professor Ciaran O’Neill, School of Business and Economics, NUI Galway. The projects include
the development of preference weights for health in Ireland, the development of unit costs in nonacute care settings and an examination of care quality in designated care facilities. The unit is
housed within a broader group of researchers in the Discipline of Economics – the Health
Economics and Policy Analysis group (http://www.nuigalway.ie/health-economics/) – with
researchers on this project physically located in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society
(http://www.nuigalway.ie/ilas/).
Job Description:
The successful candidate will work with Professor Ciaran O’Neill, Professor Andrew Murphy and Dr
Liam Glynn in the measurement and analysis of care quality indicators for diabetic patients in a
primary care setting in Ireland.
Duties:
The successful candidate will assist in the development and application of methodologies to
assess the quality of diabetes care provided in a primary care setting in Ireland. S/he will also
undertake an analysis aimed at understanding variations in care quality within an economics
framework. The appointee will be an innovative, pro-active, experienced individual with the
capacity to consolidate and develop existing and new research within the remit of the HRBResearch Leaders Award held by Professor O’Neill. The successful candidate will ideally have
significant research experience in the areas of primary care, care quality and diabetes care. The
post is for 30 months fulltime.
Duties:
You will undertake the following research activities:
 Assist in the development of appropriate care quality indicators in a primary care setting for
diabetic patients
 Secure, in collaboration with the principal investigator, data on care quality and practice
characteristics from primary care practices located in the west of Ireland
 Develop and apply economic models to explain variations in care quality
 Contribute to the analysis and drafting of research related to the study for publication in
different forms, including research reports and peer-reviewed, international journals.
 Carry out any additional duties on other on-going research studies as may reasonably be
required within the general scope and level of the post
Qualifications:

A PhD (normally) in economics or cognate quantitative discipline.
Knowledge & Experience - Essential
 Good evidence of strong quantitative skills in general and econometric methods in
particular

Clear evidence of good inter-personal skills

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Experience in publishing in health services, health policy and/or health economics journals
Knowledge & Experience – Desirable
 Experience in the analysis of both Irish and other healthcare systems

Experience in the preparation and submission of research grants

Experience in the organization of conferences
Salary: €40,000 fixed per annum
Start date: Position is available from February 15th 2016
