Part B: Short Answer: Instructions: In at least one paragraph, answer the questions below.
1. What were some reason that Frances Willard and other gave for why alcohol should be banned from
society?
Frances Willard and others asserted alcohol damaged society. For instance, they claimed it
hurt women. Many women were victims of spouse abuse due to the abuse of alcohol.
Likewise, they claimed it hurt men too. They stressed that alcohol increased unemployment
and caused men to lose jobs.
2. Do you think bootleggers and gangsters were for or against Prohibition in the 1920s? Explain.
Bootleggers and gangsters would, ironically, have loved Prohibition. Before Prohibition,
people could sell alcohol legally. This meant there was a ton of competition. Yet, when it
was illegal, only those willing to break the law would sell it. This meant there was less
competition. Therefore, bootleggers and gangsters wanted alcohol to be illegal so that they
could control the black market for it.
3. How did World War I impact the Flapper movement and the changes that women experienced in society
in the 1920s?
During WW I, women worked in factories. This proved they were just as capable as men.
This led to a desire for more independence and equality for women. That is why, as the
1920s began, one could see women breaking from societal norms of the past. They were
seeking greater independence and less restriction by past societal expectations.
