CONTACT WITH GOD
I was a lonely child in an unhappy family situation and I would say my prayers
and talk to God. On one occasion, I had earnestly prayed to find a lost item,
and that prayer was answered straightaway. I knew God was there, but I could
never be happy that I had made contact with Him.
Many years later, I was told of miracles in other people’s lives. I went to a meeting and
loved the happy songs, the testimonies were impressive, but what really went to my
heart was hearing the Word of God being preached with understanding. The only
negative I had was the speaking in tongues. I thought it was all right for others, but I did
not want to do this myself. The next day I prayed and a 'baby language' came out. As a
highly qualified research scientist, I found it hard to accept that I was "babbling" and I
rejected this language and it did not appear again. I got baptized to show that I meant
to do things God's way from now on.
I still had difficulty accepting the speaking in tongues. I had always operated by
reasoning my way through challenges. It took me a month, but gradually I realized what
a brilliant scheme it was.
On January 1st 1987, I accepted that if I spoke in tongues I would know for sure that I
had the Holy Spirit. When I prayed I burst forth in a wonderful flowing tongue; I knew
that I had made contact with God and that He cared for me as an individual.
