The Leadership Certificate School of Medicine & Public Health SMPH Leadership Certificate The Program The Leadership Certificate is based upon four assumptions: • The University of Wisconsin-Madison is committed to developing the leadership capabilities within its community • Effective leadership skills can be taught and learned at the University and in the community • The University environment is a strategic and appropriate setting for mastering both leadership theory and leadership skills • The success of leadership is measured by direct impact on individuals, organizations, and society SMPH Leadership Certificate Requirements • Documentation of 100 hours: – – – – Leadership roles, PDS course work Civic engagement Out-of-classroom learning • Educational artifact that reflects upon personal growth and impact on others • Ethics statement • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 at time of application SMPH Leadership Certificate Activity Areas • Leadership Roles – 30 hours max/15 hours min • Academic Course – SMPH Patient, Doctor, Society (PDS) Course – 30 hours max • Civic Engagement – 40 hours max/15 hours min • Out-of-Classroom Learning – 30 hours max/15 hours min SMPH Leadership Certificate Leadership Roles • 30 hours max/15 hours min – 15 hours max for meetings • Accept a leadership role where major responsibilities are expected • Accomplish and set goals • Empower and lead others • Have a significant impact on others and foster a positive change on: – Group members – The organization – The campus SMPH Leadership Certificate Verification of Leadership Roles • • • • summary on what was learned and how it relates to specific content area SMPH Leadership Certificate Civic Engagement • 40 hours max/15 hours min • Service to and active involvement in community • Volunteering must consist of direct service. – Volunteering at community agencies – Tutoring – Mentoring – Assisting individuals with dissabilities SMPH Leadership Certificate Verification of Civic Engagement • • • • Name and mission of organization Volunteer position title List of primary duties Supervisor name and contact information • One-page summary of what was learned and how it relates to specific content area • Verification from UW-SMPH Director of Community Service Programs SMPH Leadership Certificate Out-of-Classroom Learning • 30 hours max/15 hours min • Non-credit leadership learning – Workshops – Seminars – Conferences • Hours will only be counted for actual workshop time (i.e. free lunch during a conference doesn’t count) SMPH Leadership Certificate Verification for Out-of-Classroom Learning • Certificate, letter, or card of participation • Itinerary for every activity submitted • One-page summary on what was learned and how it relates to specific content area SMPH Leadership Certificate Content Areas • Individual – 25 hours min • Group – 30 hours min • Community – 45 hours min SMPH Leadership Certificate Individual Content Area • 25 hours min • Knowing yourself is fundamental to leadership development • Recognizes individuals who: – Aware of beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions that motivate one to take action – Can become a committed participant in the shaping of a group’s common purpose – Thinks, feels, and behaves with consistency, genuinness, and authenticity SMPH Leadership Certificate Group Content Area • 30 hours minimum • Fulfilled by PDS course (2 years) • Includes collaboration and dealing with controversy in a civil, respectful manner • Collaboration: – Empowering self and others through trust – Recognizes differences in viewpoint are inevitable SMPH Leadership Certificate – Pride in accomplishing something Community Content Area • 45 hours min • Citizenship: – Becoming responsibly committed to the community and society – Impacting a positive change on behalf of others in the community SMPH Leadership Certificate Educational Artifact • Summarizes what you learned in activity areas and content areas • Addresses how your experience will make a difference in your future – Think: “action plan” • Describes your impact on others • Format: 5-page paper SMPH Leadership Certificate Applying for the Certificate • Fill out record-of-activities form • Complete verification template – including one-page summaries • Complete educational artifact • Sign ethics statement • Submit hard-copies to: Center for Leadership and Involvement: 239 Red Gym, 716 Langdon St. SMPH Leadership Certificate Applying for the Certificate • Annual deadline April 1st • Application reviewed by committee – Notified of
