On behalf of the Governing Board, faculty and staff, we thank you for your continued support of our athletics programs and invite you to join us in another exciting season. In the 13 years Jeff Klein has coached the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers, the team has had five Foothill Conference titles and twelve playoff appearances. Last season, Coach Klein took his team of young men all the way to the state championships. Eight sophomores from that team have transferred to 4-year colleges where they are continuing their academic and athletic pursuits. The Panthers welcome rookie head coach Tasha Bunett to the Chaffey College family. Coach Burnett comes to us having coached at the Division I and II levels. A California community college alum, Coach Burnett brings a wealth of personal experience to our players as they complete their education here at Chaffey and transfer to the 4-year level. We look forward to seeing her build the program into one of the finest in the state. The strong history of academic and athletic success of our basketball program is continuing with the talented individuals that will take to the court tonight. Many will graduate this year, continuing their academics at four-year universities throughout the country. These studentathletes will take with them the high standards the Chaffey College coaching staff has instilled in them, making their families and our college proud. Dr. Cory Schwartz | Dean’s Welcome Panther Basketball is always an exciting time at Chaffey College, providing our students, faculty and loyal fans with exciting athletic action throughout the winter season. Last year, we cheered Coach Jeff Klein’s squad all the way to the Final Four in their quest for the college’s first state basketball championship. This year is already looking like an equally impressive season with the Panthers competing in regional tournaments prior to the start of the conference season. This season we welcome Coach Tasha Burnett to the helm of Lady Panther Basketball. Coach Burnett has assembled a young team that is learning skills both on and off the court that will make them successful this season and beyond. Last year, the Panthers transferred ten student-athletes onto 4-year colleges throughout the U.S. and North America. We are proud of our alumni Panthers and look forward to following their progress as they continue their higher education. Please join me in the Sports Center this season as we cheer on both Panther teams. Thank you for your continued support of Chaffey College Athletics. Jeff Klein | Athletic Director’s Welcome Welcome to the 2014-15 season of Panther Basketball. This is my 14th season leading the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers on the hardwood and my first in the dual role as the college’s athletic director. In my 13 years here, Panther Basketball has advanced to postseason play an impressive 12 times including back-to-back trips to the state championships. This year’s team is looking to play up to their full potential and make a deep playoff run. Coach Burnett begins her first season with the Panthers. In the fall, the college hosted the 4th Annual Panther Pride Tournament with teams from throughout the state. As always, the race to the conference championship will be an exciting one. Coach Burnett has put together an excellent coaching staff. Newcomers Unique Anderson and Abina Lewis will be joined by former player and returning coach Keisha Mackall. This spring, please also join me in cheering our Panther baseball, softball, track & field and swimming teams on to victory. On behalf of the coaches and staff of the Chaffey College Athletics Department, I thank you for your continued support. THE PAST The CHP starts the 2014-15 as the only men's basketball team in the state to have advanced to the Final Four the last two years. This year’s team is on a mission to accomplish that and more. The 2013-14 squad had eight of its nine sophomores receive scholarships to four-year universities. Combine that with the six sophomores from 2012-13, and there are currently 12 CHP alum playing this year while two are redshirting -- including four at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver-known as the "Stanford of Canada." This does not happen without a heavy emphasis put on success both in the classroom and on the basketball court. The CHP has accumulated a 303-112 record during Coach Klein’s tenure at Chaffey. This includes: 1) playoff appearances in 12 of their 13 seasons; 2) Five Foothill Conference titles; 3) Two Final Four appearances; and 4) one State Championship Game appearance. Equally impressive is the 68 players (an average of over five a year) who have received scholarships to play at four-year universities. Thirteen players have also played professionally either here in the United States or abroad. THE PRESENT: WE DON'T REBUILD AT CHAFFEY-- WE RELOAD. Losing nine sophomores is something not a lot of programs could handle and still have the high expectations that are expected of this year's team. This comes from the tireless efforts of all those involved in the basketball program from recruiting highly talented players, to success in the classroom, to having young men mature both physically and mentally. High expectations are part of what attracts these studentathletes and their families to become part of the CHP family. Getting better every day in all aspects is an expectation of every Chaffey player in the program. The CHP returns only three players who have played for the Panthers before. Carl Robinson returns after grey shirting last season. Breejae Flonnoy and Mufaro Murinda also return from last year’s team. POINT GUARD #4 Breejae Flonnoy #10 Brandon Shaw #12 Victor Joseph #24 Carl Robinson #30 Mateu Vilakazi As usual, the point guard position is one of the strengths of the Panthers. Carl Robinson was a major contributor to the team that lost in the State championship game two years ago. Breejae Flonnoy was a major contributor in the playoffs last year. Both Carl and Breejae bring experience and an ability to break guys down off the dribble. Victor Joseph was an ALL-CIF point guard who can score with his deadly 3-point shot or off the dribble. Mateu Vilakazi and Brandon Shaw were solid performers on very good high school teams and hope to contribute off the bench. WINGS #1 LJ Harris #2 Brandon Franklin #11 Marciano Rogers #14 Donavan Taylor #22 Kenny Truesdelle #25 Mufaro Murinda The wings will shoulder a major part of the scoring load this year. Mufaro Murinda is a very interesting prospect. At 6’7 and very athletic, he has the potential to play at a Division I school next year. He can score from anywhere on the floor. Brandon Franklin is a combo guard who does it all on the floor and can contribute to the team’s success in so many ways. Marciano Rogers is a local player who comes back home after playing out of state last year and can quietly put up big numbers. LJ Harris was a League MVP in high school who can shoot the lights out from the perimeter. Donavan Taylor is a high energy wing who is starting to realize his potential. Kenny Truesdelle will be counted on off the bench with his long-range shooting. POST MEN #32 Christopher Edward #34 Tim Myles #35 Kalil Glover #42 Tyler Warren Tim Myles is a Division I bounce back from the University of New Mexico who prepped at Etiwanda. He can be a dominant rebounder and defensive presence in the paint. Christopher Edward was so wellthought of by his teammates he was voted a team captain as a freshman. He, too, brings defensive presence on the inside and will contribute major minutes this year. Kalil Glover is a tremendous athlete who can really run the floor, jump out of the gym, and block shots. Tyler Warren is probably the strongest player the Panthers have had in their program in a long time and can be a force patrolling the paint. THE FUTURE The future will always be bright at Chaffey if these student-athletes continue to work hard both in the classroom and on the court like their predecessors. They see the “CHP”alumni receiving their Associate’s Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, and a fair amount of them their Master’s Degrees. They also see many alum playing professional basketball. That combination will continue to attract high-quality student-athletes to the program. The future will continue to see a roster loaded with predominantly local talent from the Inland Empire. The CHP has made a commitment to the local student-athletes who attend our district high schools. The hard work of the coaching staff and continued excellent administrative support will help get the CHP to its ultimate goal of winning a State Championship. The 2014-15 will be his 30th season overall. He was named the first professional expert to coach men’s basketball at a California Community College in 2001. This title enabled Klein to be a full-time coach. Over the last 13 years with Klein as the coach, the CHP avg 23 wins a season (303 – 112). With nine 20+ win seasons over the past 13 years. Playoffs twelve of the thirteen years. Klein is most proud of the 68 CHP alumni who have received scholarships to four year universities. The 2013-14 addition of the “CHP” had a tall order to follow. The year before the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers made it all the way to the State final game. This squad did not want to get outdone and also made it to the State Final 4 a feat that no other community college in the State had done. In addition, the 2013-14 Panthers won the prestigious 16 team Riverside City College Tournament. The Panthers were seeded 4th in the South and beat SD City 80-76, Pasadena City 79-71, Cerritos 68-66. The CHP then took on eventual State Champion Santa Rosa and lost at the buzzer 49-47. The Panthers were an amazing 11-0 at the Chaffey College Sports Center and sent 8 sophomores on full scholarships to 4 year universities. Soph Adom Jacko led the squad with being named 1st team All Foothill Conference and 1st Team All State (Loyola Marymount). He was followed by All Conference selections Julian Nichols (Western Oregon), John Gilliam (Eastern New Mexico), and Jeff Nibo (Valdosta State). Pape Seck (Simon Fraser), Roderick Evans-Taylor (Simon Fraser), Tyler Shea (Western New Mexico) and Chris Fowler (Iowa Wesleyan) all contributed to our very successful season. The 2012-2013 Hustlin’ Panthers will go down as one of the best Chaffey Basketball teams in school history. They won the toughest Conference in the State (Foothill) outright and then made it to the CCCAAMB State Finals. Along the way the CHP led the State in scoring and beat #1 in the South Saddleback twice. The first time to win the Fullerton Tournament and the second in the elite eight where the CHP knocked off the Gauchos in convincing fashion on their home court to advance to the State Tournament in Sacramento. The CHP took on Undefeated (30-0) perennial powerhouse and #1 overall seed San Francisco City College. The Panthers used a suffocating full court press to bring down SFCC on a last second shot by Sango Niang. Fans stormed the court as the undefeated season of SFCC came to an end! The dream season ended for the CHP in the State Finals to Mt San Antonio College. The Chaffey roster had six dynamic Sophomores who went on to achieve full scholarships and all conference honors. Justin Long MVP Foothill Conference and first team all state (Hawaii Pacific University), Ryan Nitz 1st team Foothill Conference, All State Tournament Team (Cal State Monterey Bay), Kenny Morgan 1st Team Foothill Conference ( Adams State University), Sango Niang 1st team Foothill Conference ( Simon Fraser University), Justin Cole Hon Ment Foothill Conference ( Simon Fraser University) and D’On Hall (Lindsay Wilson University). Coach Klein, at age 23, became the youngest head coach in Southern California when he took the job at South Pasadena High School. Before coming to Chaffey, Klein concluded a dramatic season at Upland High School where he coached the Highlanders to a CIF Division 1-AAA title in 2001. Under his direction, the Highlanders ranked in the Top 10 nationally and won 28 games in a row. During his nine seasons at Upland, Klein led the team to three league titles and made the CIF playoffs every year starting in 1995. Klein has earned top honors in coaching being named "Coach of the Year" by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA), Fox Sports West 2 television, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and the Los Angeles Times. He was also honored as the "Teacher of the Year" in 1996 from Upland High School. Coach Klein has been fortunate to coach many fine student-athletes. Many have gone on to attend 4 year universities and a few have reached the NBA. Stacey Augmon (UNLV/Atlanta Hawks), Desmond Penigar (Utah State/Orlando Magic), Kirk Snyder (Nevada/Utah Jazz), and Jimmy Alapag (Cal State San Bernardino/Captain/MVP Philippine Basketball Association) are those who made it to the big time. Coach Klein graduated from Lawrence High School on Long Island, New York, where he was an All-County athlete in football, basketball, and track. A graduate of SUNY at Cortland, Jeff earned his BS degree in Physical Education in 1985. In 1989, Jeff completed his MBA from the University of La Verne. Over the years, Coach Klein has hosted a very successful 50-50 basketball camp in which he has influenced many young athletes in the fundamentals of basketball. In his free time Klein enjoys spending time with his two children Danny (21) and Amanda (19), and traveling. He has helped lead the CHP to the best record in the Foothill Conference as well as five conference championships and one State Finals appearance during that time. The Panthers have made the playoffs in 12 of Keller’s thirteen years as assistant. They have finished 1st or 2nd in the State in scoring in six of those seasons. Mark Borgeson enters his 3rd season with the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers and his 13th overall at the collegiate and professional levels. Prentice Harris is entering his 7th year as an assistant coach at Chaffey College. His responsibilities are player development, recruiting and player management, out of bounds plays, and academics. He has been part of two Foothill Conference championship teams (2011 and 2013). Coach Keller is known as the “Father of the Red Zone.” He and Coach Klein developed the CHP’s infamous defense. He also calls all of the Panther’s defensive sets during games. Keller was an All-League point guard at South Pasadena High School where he both played and coached for Coach Klein. He then went on to play at Cal State LA before an eye injury cut his career short and he got into coaching. He received his BA in Sports Management from Cal State LA and Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific. Keller is a PE teacher and Department Chair for San Gabriel High School Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Coach Borgeson graduated from Azusa Pacific University. After a successful basketball career that included stints in the Netherlands, Germany, Czechoslovakia, the World Basketball League as well tryouts with the Seattle Supersonics; Coach Borgeson returned to Azusa Pacific to serve as an assistant coach, before moving on to Pasadena City College and Central Connecticut State Univ. (NCAA Div. 1). He then served as a high school head coach and athletic director for one year in Virginia, before coaching professionally in southern China for the next few seasons. After stepping away from coaching professionally, Coach Mark co-founded Frontline Sports Management; a professional sports agency representing professional players and coaches throughout Europe, Asia and South America. He has also been very active in the IE community, as a coach, trainer and tournament promoter. Coach Borgeson and his wife, Yolanda, together, have 6 children; Lorenna, Chris, Mark Jr., Lorenzo, Tage and Andrew. They reside in Rancho Cucamonga. 4 MEN’S BASKETBALL As a player, he won a C.I.F. championship at Upland High School (2001), where he was all league selection 3 years as a Varsity starter. He then took his talents to Chaffey College where he was all conference both years and conference champion 2003. Earning a scholarship to Northwest Nazarene in Idaho where he helped the team double their win totals. Finally, he found a home at California State University San Bernardino where he led the team to a west region championship and their first final four appearance under Jeff Oliver. Prentice’s accolades earned his final year at CSUSB were: first team all CCAA conference, second team all region, most outstanding player of the west region tournament, and athlete of the year (2007). Prentice Harris is a graduate of California State San Bernardino and received his master’s degree from Concordia University. He is the father of Marley Williams-Harris (5). 2014-15 Panthers Men’s Basketball Numerical Roster # NAME POSITION HEIGHT WEIGHT YEAR HIGH SCHOOL HOMETOWN 1 2 4 10 11 12 14 22 24 25 30 32 34 35 42 Harris, LJ (James) Franklin, Brandon Flonnoy, Breejae Shaw, Brandon Rogers, Marciono Joseph, Victor Taylor, Donavan Truesdelle, Kenny Robinson, Carl Murinda, Mufaro Vilakazi, Mateu Edward, Christopher Myles, Tim Glover, Kalil Warren, Tyler Guard Guard Point Guard Guard Guard Point Guard Guard Guard Point Guard Guard Guard Post Post Post Post 6'3 6'3 5'6 6'3 6'3 6'0 6'3 6'4 6'2 6'7 6'2 6'7 6'7 6'8 6'7 185 185 120 155 190 165 183 170 165 190 185 200 230 205 210 FR SO SO FR SO FR FR FR SO SO FR FR SO FR FR San Bernardino Citrus Hill Kaiser La Verne Lutheran Ontario Rancho Cucamonga Silverado Long Beach Millikan Pasadena Claremont Rancho Cucamonga Claremont Etiwanda Claremont Silverado San Bernardino Perris Fontana La Verne Ontario Rancho Cucamonga Victorville Long Beach Pasadena Claremont Rancho Cucamonga Claremont Rancho Cucamonga Claremont Victorville MEN’S BASKETBALL 5 LJ Harris #1 Guard Freshman 6'3 185lbs | San Bernardino HS Hometown: San Bernardino Favorite Team: Chicago Bulls Favorite Athlete: LeBron James Favorite Food: tacos Favorite Color: red Major: Business Administration I play basketball for the love of the game and for my family. Chaffey College Athletics Athletic Training | David Adling The college’s athletic training staff plays an integral role in the success of our athletic programs. The head trainer provides optimal care to our studentathletes through preventative measures, rehabilitation, injury/illness management, emergency and non-emergency attention, and education. Individual support and attention is given to each athlete specific to their sport, needs, and goals. 12 MEN’S BASKETBALL Academic Commitment Academics Academic Counseling We are committed to academics at Chaffey College. Our students are provided a variety of academic and learning resources through the college’s student services departments. Students have the benefits of services such as the transfer center, success centers, and academic assistance. Our studentathletes understand that it is important to excel in academics. Chaffey College provides individualized assistance for each student. The college’s athletic department is one of the finest in the state. This success can be attributed to many factors; great faculty coaches, academic counseling, and our studentathletes. We understand that academics come first and should be the most important part in any student’s life at Chaffey. That is why the athletic program includes an athletic counselor. Chaffey College instruction is divided into six schools: Business and Applied Technology, Chino Campus, Language Arts, Health Sciences, Mathematics and Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, and Kinesiology, Nutrition & Athletics. Chaffey College is fully accredited and our academic and vocational programs are recognized both locally and nationally. Our faculty excel in teaching, which distinguishes Chaffey College from other institutions. This exceptional team consists of experts in all disciplines who are scholars and teachers of tremendous talent and ability. Each is a recognized scholar in his or her chosen field. Jeff Moser and other staff members work with student-athletes to provide guidance and support as they progress through their academic careers. Learning specialists and tutors lend strong support by working with our athletes on their learning styles and strategies, as well as other learning programs. More than 85% of our athletes are recruited from the district that our college serves. The 2013-14 school year was extremely successful for the Chaffey athletic programs. Through the hard work and dedication of our coaches, staff, and counselor, these athletes are demonstrating academic success. Last year, numerous athletes transferred to a college or university, many of which received scholarships.
