The campus is located on an outstanding, picturesque 40 hectare site, high on a hill some 12 kilometres to the north of the Brisbane CBD, and close to the international airport. The campus is accessible via Brisbane City Council buses which run from the city to Approach Road. ACU also offers a free shuttle bus to ferry students from Toombul and Northgate Railway Stations and Chermside Shopping Centre, to the Campus. Uniquely, car parking is free of charge and there is ample parking space to go around for all students wishing to access the campus by vehicle. With 5,000 students on site, we are proud of our close-knit community. ACU Brisbane offers a caring and individual educational experience. Campus facilities include a 25 metre swimming pool and a parent’s room. There is a student recreational room with a large screen television and pool table. There is also a brand new Multi-Sports court. All these facilities are for use by students free of charge. There is also a cafeteria and library on campus, and many parts of the campus are wi-fi enabled. EARLY ACHIEVERS’ PROGRAM The campus has undergone rapid expansion. The campus is well known for its offerings in Education, Nursing and Midwifery, Paramedicine, Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Religious Education, Social Work, Social Science, Theology, Arts and Business. The campus will be offering a number of new courses including Accounting and Finance, Information Technology, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology in 2014 as well as new double degrees across different faculties: Exercise Science/Business Administration, Exercise Science/Public Health, Applied Public Health/ Global Studies, Arts/Global Studies, Business Administration/Global Studies and Commerce/ Global Studies. The Early Achievers’ Program (EAP) is an early entry scheme that recognises the achievements and community contributions made by prospective students, of both school leaver and non-school leaver backgrounds. New for 2014 BACHELOR OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE BACHELOR OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY The new Bachelor of Accounting and Finance is focused on preparation for a career in banking, insurance, investment or financial services. This degree is unique in its concentration on Accounting and Finance, and will provide an opportunity for graduates to simultaneously be recognised as Accountants and Finance professionals. Occupational therapists work with a range of clients to help them identify physical, cognitive or societal barriers to participation. Occupational therapists work with clients to assess their environment and help them adapt and participate in daily activities which most people take for granted. Want to find out more? BACHELOR OF GLOBAL STUDIES DUAL DEGREES Bachelor of Global Studies will give you the opportunity to learn about the social, political, cultural, legal, environmental and economic changes that are shaping the world. Bachelor of Global Studies students must undertake this degree with a complementary ACU degree of either Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Theology or Bachelor of Applied Public Health. Want to find out more? BACHELOR OF SPEECH PATHOLOGY The Bachelor of Speech Pathology will teach you how to help people who have trouble communicating and/or swallowing. The course encompasses all aspects of communication including: speech, writing, reading, signs, symbols and gestures. Want to find out more? DIGITAL JOURNALISM The rapidly changing media environment provides the opportunity for ACU to provide a suite of Digital Journalism units that is designed to keep up with the evolution of the new media and resulting changes to journalistic practice. The units can be taken either as a Major or a Minor – depending on the student’s choice and program. The Digital Journalism stream is a professionally-oriented program whose units are designed to produce students who are skilled in a range of areas of digital media and convergence journalism. The capstone production units enable the students to consolidate the skills that they have developed in previous units and to develop leadership skills as News Directors in the converged newsroom. Student work produced in the online news, audio and video journalism units will be checked and published online as part of a converged web news site. Advanced level students will also be given the opportunity to apply for internships with local media outlets. Want to find out more? Activities and Events ACU SHUTTLE SERVICES (5.30pm – 8.30pm) ACU will be running a free bus to and from Toombul, Northgate, Chermside and Hawthorne on Open Night. They will depart from the shuttle bus station at the back of the library. Refer to the times below. Throughout the year and on Open Night, ACU offers two bus services which run Monday to Saturday. The Toombul service leaves from Grace Street (Toombul Railway Station end) on the half hour and on the hour, continues to Northgate Railway Station (Ridge Street, ramp side), and then on to ACU. Buses return to Toombul using the reverse route, and leave at 15 minutes and 45 minutes past the hour. The last bus leaving from Toombul is at 9.00pm and the last bus leaving from ACU is at 9.15pm. The Chermside service leaves from Thomas Street, Chermside (opposite the Quest Apartments) every 40 minutes. The last bus leaving from Chermside is at 8.50pm, and the last bus leaving from ACU is at 9.10pm. There is a 5.30pm service leaving Thomas Street, arriving at ACU at approx. 5.45pm, and returning back to Chermside. The Hawthorne service has been added for Open Night only. The bus will leave from the school bus stop on Virginia Avenue at Lourdes Hill College at 5.00pm. The return bus will leave ACU at 7.00pm and return to the same bus stop on Virginia Avenue. Cars can be parked inside the Lourdes Hill College grounds. CAMPUS TOURS (Information Tent, 5.30pm – 7.30pm) Depart every half-hour. Meet at the Information Tent at the Bell Tower Court. EXERCISE SCIENCE (O Building) Throughout the evening, the School of Exercise Science laboratories in Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, and Strength & Conditioning will be open to provide prospective students with an insight into what it is to be an Exercise Scientist. Course presentations will be given in the Exercise Physiology laboratory (O building) at 5.50pm, and repeated at 6.45pm. MCAULEY CAMPUS STUDENT ASSOCIATION Visit McASA and discover the social, sporting and cultural facilities it offers on the Brisbane Campus. Throughout the year, McASA runs a variety of events and functions catering to a wide range of interests including; start and end of semester parties, end of year ball, weekly on and off campus sport including soccer, touch football, netball and cricket, and charity events such as the winter sleep out, cultural fiesta, and shave for a cure. NURSING, MIDWIFERY AND PARAMEDICINE (N Building – Peter Sheehan Building, Rooms NC.05 & NC.15) The Clinical Simulation Centre provides several laboratories for students of the Brisbane Campus to learn the skills of a clinician in their stream of study. On open night, the ward will be outfitted with our computerised healthcare life-size human simulators and healthcare equipment to view Nursing and Midwifery practices. Also to view is our purpose built rooms for high fidelity simulation where you will view Paramedics in action. Open Night 2013 PARENT INFORMATION SESSION QTAC (I Building, Room IB.20, 6.30pm) (W Building, Room WA.01, 6.45pm) Information on how parents can support their son or daughter and assist them as they leave school and start university. A representative from QTAC will present on the application system and process at 6.30pm. They will be available before and after the presentation to answer your questions. Program 5.30pm (Bell Tower Court) The state-of-the-art facilities provided in this building are purpose built for the Physiotherapy students and provide a modern, open learning space with a view over to the airport and sand hills of Moreton Island. There are three Physiotherapy Laboratories and an Anatomy Laboratory encompassing models and iPads used for teaching and enhancing the student experience, with many APPS available to assist in the learning process. These facilities will be open on the night, and a continuous video of the students learning will be playing.
